What it does
amap-mcp-server talks to the API of the Chinese mapping service 高德地图 (Amap, Gaode Maps). An agent gets tools for geocoding (`maps_geo`, `maps_regeocode`), IP location, weather by city or adcode, and routes on foot (up to 100 km), by bicycle (up to 500 km), by car and by public transit, each built from coordinates or from addresses. There is distance measurement (`maps_distance`), keyword and around-a-point place search (`maps_text_search`, `maps_around_search`) and a place card by ID (`maps_search_detail`). The server is published on PyPI and runs through `uvx amap-mcp-server` over stdio (the default), SSE or streamable HTTP. The API key from the Amap open platform goes in the `AMAP_MAPS_API_KEY` variable.
Who it is for. Travellers, location analysts and developers of Chinese services who need an agent for routes and place search in China.
Good fit when
- An agent plans a trip in Beijing and builds a route between two addresses.
- A list of addresses is converted to coordinates through `maps_geo`.
- Weather is checked by city or adcode before departure.
- Cafes or stations are searched within 1,000 metres of a point through `maps_around_search`.
Not a fit when
- You need maps of Russian cities: a Yandex Maps server exists for them.
- No Amap key is available: without `AMAP_MAPS_API_KEY` the tools do not respond.
- You must work offline: the server calls the Amap API.

Limitations
The `AMAP_MAPS_API_KEY` key is required and is issued on the Amap open platform (lbs.amap.com) after registration. Tool texts and sample addresses in the README are Chinese: pass addresses the way they are written on the Amap map. Walking routes are limited to 100 km and cycling to 500 km. Requests go to the Amap API, so the service sees addresses and coordinates. With SSE or streamable HTTP the server listens on `0.0.0.0:8000`; close that port outside the local network.
How to disable. Remove the `amap-mcp-server` entry from the MCP client configuration and stop the process if you ran HTTP or SSE. Revoke the API key in the Amap console.
FAQ
How do I connect amap-mcp-server?
Add a server to the client configuration with the command `uvx` and the argument `amap-mcp-server`, and set `AMAP_MAPS_API_KEY` in `env`. The default transport is stdio.
How do I run the server over SSE or HTTP?
Set `AMAP_MAPS_API_KEY` in the environment and run `uvx amap-mcp-server sse` or `uvx amap-mcp-server streamable-http`. The client connects to `http://0.0.0.0:8000/sse` or `/mcp`.
Where do I get the API key?
Register on the Amap open platform (lbs.amap.com) and create a key for web services.
Should I route by coordinates or by address?
The address versions are preferred, for example `maps_direction_walking_by_address`. For intercity transit the departure and arrival cities are mandatory.
Which route types does the server build?
Walking, cycling, driving and public transit, from coordinates or from addresses. `maps_distance` also measures the distance between points.
