Extended access
Why this level
- The server calls the external WeatherAPI service and sends it city names from your requests
- The API key is stored in the client config or the container's environment variable
Install
- Works in
Manual install
go build -o weather-mcp-server ./cmd/weather-mcp-serverBuilds the binary. Then set its path in the command block and the WEATHER_API_KEY key in the env of the Claude Desktop config.
Access and checks
How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

What it does
Weather API MCP Server is a small Go server that lets an agent in Claude Desktop look up current weather. The agent passes a city name, and the server queries the WeatherAPI service and returns the data in readable form. The repository includes a `weather.html` template for formatting the reply. There is one tool: `current_weather` takes the required `city` parameter and returns current conditions. It needs a WeatherAPI key, issued in the service account and passed in the `WEATHER_API_KEY` environment variable. Three launch modes exist. Local mode runs the built binary through `command` in the Claude Desktop config. Remote mode connects the client to an address like `http://host:port/sse` where the server is already running. For containers there is a Dockerfile: the image is built with `docker build` and port 8000 is published. The project is split into handlers, services, tools and views, with mock services for tests.
Who it is for. For developers who try MCP on a simple example or want to give an agent in Claude Desktop a weather lookup without a heavy server.
Good fit when
- You want to ask an agent about the current weather in a city and use the answer when reasoning about a route or clothing
- You want to study a small MCP server in Go split into handlers, services and tools
- You want to check how a client connects to an MCP server in remote mode at the /sse address
- You want to run the server in a container on port 8000 without building the binary on your machine
Not a fit when
- You need a multi-day forecast: there is a single tool and it returns current weather only
- You need Yandex Weather data for Russian cities: mcp-yandex-weather and yandex-weather-mcp exist for that
- You have no WeatherAPI key: without it the server returns nothing
- You need weather alerts, history or astronomy data: the description lists none

Environment variables
WEATHER_API_KEYrequired, secret- WeatherAPI service key from the account page.
Limitations
The server does one thing: return current weather for a city. It needs a WeatherAPI key, issued in the service account. The data comes from an external service, so data quality, limits and pricing depend on that service.
The first install route requires building the binary with `go build` or having one. Prebuilt releases are not mentioned in the description. The build instructions name the `cmd/github-mcp-server` directory, although in the repository it is `cmd/weather-mcp-server`, so take the correct path from the file tree. Config examples are given for Claude Desktop. The last commit dates from March 2026. The license is MIT.
How to disable. Delete the weather-mcp-server block from claude_desktop_config.json and restart Claude Desktop. Stop the container with docker stop weather-mcp-server, and the WeatherAPI key can be replaced in the service account.
FAQ
Is there a weather MCP for Claude Desktop?
Yes, Weather API MCP Server gives Claude Desktop the current_weather tool. It asks the WeatherAPI service for current weather by city name. An API key is required.
Where does the weather MCP key come from?
The WEATHER_API_KEY key is created in the WeatherAPI account. It reaches the server through an environment variable in the env block of the Claude Desktop config or the -e flag when running the Docker container.
How do I run Weather API MCP Server in Docker?
Build the image with docker build -t weather-mcp-server . and run docker run -e WEATHER_API_KEY=your-key -d --name weather-mcp-server -p 8000:8000 weather-mcp-server. The client connects at an address like http://host:port/sse.
Can the server give a weekly forecast?
No. The only tool, current_weather, returns current weather for the given city. A multi-day forecast is not claimed in the description.
How does Weather API MCP Server differ from Yandex Weather MCP?
Here data comes from WeatherAPI and the server is written in Go with one tool. Yandex Weather servers use its API, and mcp-yandex-weather offers daily and hourly forecasts beyond current weather.

README in short
The description presents the server as a lightweight tool for real-time weather and shows a demo animation. Then come installation in Claude Desktop in local and remote modes, building from source, running in Docker, the tool list with the single current_weather and a map of project directories. The testing section explains how to generate mocks with mockgen and run tests through make.
