Extended access
Why this level
- Estimates are saved to AWS Pricing Calculator and open through a shared link.
- The service relies on undocumented calculator endpoints.
Install

How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
The server creates, reads and updates AWS Pricing Calculator estimates. An agent searches about 436 services in the calculator manifest, learns configuration fields through `get_service_fields`, builds an estimate and gets a shareable calculator.aws link. No AWS credentials are needed because the server uses the calculator's public endpoints. Before saving, a linter refuses estimates the calculator would open read-only or with required inputs missing, and suggests a fix. A finished estimate can be downloaded as JSON or Markdown, and `get_estimate_cost` reads AWS-computed totals: upfront, monthly and 12-month.
Who it is for. Architects and DevOps engineers who estimate the cost of a cloud design and want the estimate in the AWS calculator rather than a spreadsheet.
Good fit when
- An EC2, RDS and S3 design is described in words, and a shareable estimate is needed for colleagues.
- An existing estimate must be copied to another region and the totals compared.
- An estimate from the calculator needs to be parsed as Markdown and commented on.
- Three environments (Dev, Quality, Production) are built from one template.
Not a fit when
- You need an official documented API, since the calculator's save and manifest endpoints are undocumented and may change.
- Prices must be computed locally without calling the calculator.
- The estimate covers a service missing from both the verified catalog and the manifest.
Example request
Build an estimate for WordPress on AWS in three environments and give me the link. If a service lacks fields, show which ones.MCP
- Transport
- stdio, http
- Authentication
- not required
Environment variables
MCP_TRANSPORT- `stdio` by default or `http` for a hosted server
ESTIMATES_STORE- In-flight estimate store: `memory` by default or `dynamodb`
ESTIMATES_TABLE- DynamoDB table name, required with `ESTIMATES_STORE=dynamodb`
TRACE- `on` enables structured trace events on stderr
Limitations
AWS computes prices, and there is no local cost estimate. The CloudFront save and manifest endpoints are undocumented and may change without notice. The verified catalog covers 21 of about 436 services, and the rest run through the linter without calibration. `get_estimate_cost` needs Playwright and Chromium (about 150 MB), installed separately. With the `memory` store, unfinished estimates vanish on restart. The project is published as a sample in the aws-samples organization. Saved estimates are open to anyone with the link.
How to disable. Remove the `aws-pricing-calculator-mcp-server` entry from the MCP client settings. Saved estimates stay on the AWS side behind their links.
FAQ
Are AWS keys required?
No. The server uses the calculator's public endpoints and needs no AWS credentials.
How do I connect the server?
Add the command `npx` with arguments `-y sample-aws-pricing-calculator-mcp@latest` to the MCP client config. The README has install buttons for Cursor, Kiro and VS Code.
How do I get the total cost?
Call `get_estimate_cost` for a saved estimate. It makes a copy of the estimate, recomputes it in the calculator and reads the totals.
Which transports exist?
stdio by default. `MCP_TRANSPORT=http` enables HTTP for hosted use, and the operator must add authentication in that case.
Where are estimates stored?
Saved estimates live in AWS Pricing Calculator and open by link. In-flight ones stay in server memory, and for DynamoDB set `ESTIMATES_STORE=dynamodb` and `ESTIMATES_TABLE`.

README in short
The server runs over stdio or HTTP, keeps in-flight estimates in memory or DynamoDB and writes structured trace events when `TRACE=on`.
