What it does
BioMCP combines 70 biomedical sources under one command grammar: PubMed, ClinVar, ClinicalTrials.gov, OncoKB and others. A program in Rust, version 0.9.1 from 02.10.2026, MIT license. MCP mode starts with `biomcp serve` or `docker run --rm -i ghcr.io/genomoncology/biomcp serve`, and the plugin installs through `/plugin marketplace add genomoncology/biomcp`. From PyPI install `pip install biomcp-cli` and not `biomcp`, which the README points out separately.
Who it is for. For researchers, bioinformaticians and clinician researchers who search papers, variants and clinical trials from an agent.
Good fit when
- You need PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov search from an agent
- You need genetic variant data from ClinVar
- You need a single command for many biomedical databases
Not a fit when
- You need treatment decisions: the service is not for clinical decisions
- You need commercial work without checking source terms
Example request
Find clinical trials on the BRAF V600E mutation from the last two years and show which PubMed papers cite themMCP
- Transport
- stdio
- Authentication
- not required
Limitations
BioMCP returns data from scientific databases and is not suitable for clinical decisions: do not make treatment decisions from it. Each source has its own rules and some limit commercial and clinical use, so read them before working. Access is minimal: public data, with keys not needed everywhere. Install biomcp-cli from PyPI.
How to disable. Remove the server entry from the client and the program the way you installed it: Homebrew, pip or Docker.
FAQ
Which sources are connected?
70 biomedical sources, including PubMed, ClinVar, ClinicalTrials.gov and OncoKB.
Which package to take from PyPI?
pip install biomcp-cli and not biomcp, as the README points out.
Can treatment decisions be made?
No, the service is not for clinical decisions.
