How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

What it does

Medical MCP Server connects an agent to open medical sources. For drugs it searches FDA, DailyMed, TGA, Health Canada and EMA, checks names through RxNorm and takes statistics from WHO. Literature comes from PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov and leading journals. The `search-drugs`, `search-drug-safety`, `search-medical-literature`, `search-clinical-trials` and `get-article-details` tools return results tagged with study type and evidence level. The tags are generated automatically from the title and abstract and are not independently checked. For PubMed an optional `NCBI_API_KEY` raises the limit from 3 to 10 requests per second.

Who it is for. Researchers, pharmacists and developers of medical AI tools who need reference data inside an agent rather than a diagnosis.

Good fit when

  • An agent compares a drug name and its registration across countries.
  • A literature review on a question is prepared and articles are read by PMID.
  • Recalls, shortages and adverse events are checked against FDA data.
  • Clinical trials for a condition are searched in ClinicalTrials.gov.

Not a fit when

  • The answer is taken as a diagnosis or prescription: the server returns reference data.
  • Queries must not be sent to external public APIs.
  • Evidence level tags are treated as a verified expert assessment.

Example request

Find ibuprofen data in FDA and EMA, then show recent randomized trials from PubMed with their evidence level.

Environment variables

NCBI_API_KEY secret
Optional NCBI key: raises the PubMed limit from 3 to 10 requests per second
MONID_API_KEY secret
Optional Monid key for Google Scholar search; without it Semantic Scholar is used

Limitations

Data comes from external public APIs, so queries leave the machine even though the project has no cloud of its own. Answers serve as a reference for a specialist, and the README calls ranking retrieval only. Evidence tags are automatic. Google Scholar search with `MONID_API_KEY` goes through Monid; without a key Semantic Scholar is used. On source failures retries and circuit breakers kick in, and `health-check` reports the state.

How to disable. Remove the `medical-mcp` entry from the client configuration. Uninstall the global package with `npm uninstall -g medical-mcp` and stop the Docker container with `docker stop medical-mcp`.

FAQ

Are API keys required?

No, the server works without them. `NCBI_API_KEY` is optional and speeds up PubMed; `MONID_API_KEY` enables Scholar search through Monid.

How do I know the sources are reachable?

Call `health-check`. It pings sources and reports latency, circuit breaker state and cache health.

How do I limit drug search to a country?

Pass `countries` to `search-drugs` with `US`, `AU`, `CA` or `EU`. The server rejects unknown codes.

How do I connect it in Claude Desktop?

Add a `medical-mcp` entry to `claude_desktop_config.json` with the `node` command and the path to `build/index.js`, then restart the app.

Can it run in Docker?

Yes. The container listens on port 3000 and the client points to `http://127.0.0.1:3000/mcp`. For stdio add `-i` and do not use `-t`.

README in short

Every source goes through a rate limiter, a circuit breaker and retries with backoff. Responses from upstream APIs are validated with Zod schemas.
