What it does
DataForSEO MCP Server lets an agent find API documentation and make authenticated requests. It supports workflows involving SERPs, keywords and other API products. The current server uses a compact generic toolset rather than one tool per endpoint. Its binary supports MCP and CLI modes, with different authentication for local and HTTP connections.
Who it is for. SEO analysts with DataForSEO accounts collecting API data through documentation-guided agent requests.
Good fit when
- Before requesting search results, the agent reads the selected endpoint’s parameters.
- An analyst looks up one documentation section for a DataForSEO product.
- A report selects only the required fields from an API response.
- A data-collection workflow runs through an MCP client and from the terminal.
Not a fit when
- You expect unlimited SEO data without provider access.
- Old v2 settings would be reused without checking the new interface.
- A large request batch would run without reviewing volume and account terms.

Environment variables
DATAFORSEO_LOGINrequired, secret- DataForSEO API login for stdio and CLI.
DATAFORSEO_PASSWORDrequired, secret- DataForSEO API password.
Limitations
stdio and CLI require API login and password; HTTP supports OAuth with environment-credential fallback. Documentation is cached for 24 hours, so check freshness when endpoint behavior changes. In v3, field filtering is keyed by API paths rather than the old server’s tool names. Data coverage and available requests depend on the DataForSEO product and the permissions and limits configured for your account.
How to disable. Remove the MCP connection or stop the local server, then revoke unused API credentials separately.
FAQ
What starts without a command?
The stdio MCP server. Commands `docs` and `request` select CLI mode.
What is the hosted endpoint?
The guide specifies `https://mcp.dataforseo.com/v3/mcp`; use an HTTP/OAuth-capable client.
Does stdio use OAuth?
No. Local stdio needs API login and password in its environment.
How do I find documentation?
Call `docs_list_sections`, then `docs_index` for the required section. `docs_search` reads documentation at the selected endpoint URL so you can prepare request parameters.
Why does an old field filter fail?
v3 keys configuration by API paths. Migrate it and test the response.
