What it does
DebugMCP gives an agent a real debugger: breakpoints, stepping, variable inspection and expression evaluation. It works as a VS Code extension (Marketplace and Open VSX, `ozzafar.debugmcpextension`) and as a standalone CLI `npm install --global debugmcp`. Since version 2.4 the CLI works without VS Code and uses explicitly configured DAP adapters, and the `debugmcp configure --agent copilot-cli` command installs the `debug-live` skill. HTTP connection: `claude mcp add --transport http --scope user debugmcp http://localhost:3001/mcp`. MIT license.
Who it is for. For developers who want an agent to find the cause of an error in a live program and not guess from the code text.
Good fit when
- The agent cannot find an error from the code text
- You need breakpoints and variable inspection from an agent
- You need a debugger for Copilot CLI or Claude Code
Not a fit when
- You cannot run someone else's code on your machine
- You need releases with version numbers on GitHub: versions go through the Marketplace
Example request
Run the failing test, set a breakpoint in the handler and show variable values at the moment of the errorMCP
- Transport
- http, stdio
- Authentication
- not required
Limitations
The debugger runs your code and expression evaluation executes code inside the process, so access is extended. Do not debug untrusted programs with an agent and do not attach it to a production process. There are no GitHub releases and versions are in the Marketplace.
How to disable. Disconnect the server in the client and remove the VS Code extension or the package with npm uninstall --global debugmcp.

How do I connect it to Claude Code?
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user debugmcp http://localhost:3001/mcp.
