MCP server

Broad access

Why this level

  • Runs your project's program under the debugger and executes expressions in its context
  • Reads workspace files through `listFiles` and `getFileContent` and hands them to the agent
  • Listens on port 4711 with no access check and no explicit binding to a local address
All reasons and checks

Install

Manual install

    "debug": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": [
        "/path/to/mcp-debug.js"
      ]
    }
  }
}

The path to `mcp-debug.js` comes from the VS Code command Copy MCP Debug Server stdio path to clipboard. Restart Claude Desktop after editing.

Access and checks

How we review

Broad accessThe tool can change data, run commands or handle secrets.

  • Runs your project's program under the debugger and executes expressions in its context
  • Reads workspace files through `listFiles` and `getFileContent` and hands them to the agent
  • Listens on port 4711 with no access check and no explicit binding to a local address

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

The extension starts an MCP HTTP server inside VS Code on port 4711, and an agent connects to it. For clients that only speak stdio (Claude Desktop), the extension adds a small `mcp-debug.js` script that forwards calls to the extension's server. Clients with SSE support (Cursor) need only the address `http://localhost:4711/sse`. The agent gets three tools. `listFiles` lists workspace files by include and exclude patterns, and `getFileContent` returns a file with line numbers by absolute path. The third, `debug`, takes a plan of steps: `setBreakpoint` (with an optional condition), `removeBreakpoint`, `launch`, `continue` and `evaluate`. Launch takes the first configuration from `.vscode/launch.json` and substitutes the current file for `${file}`. After each step the agent gets the debugger's reply: the stop location, values of evaluated expressions and errors, and since version 0.1.2 exceptions as well. It works with anything that has a debug adapter and a debugger console in VS Code, including Python and C++.

Who it is for. For VS Code developers whose code misbehaves and who want an agent to step through it in the debugger instead of guessing from the text.

Good fit when

  • A function returns a wrong result and needs to be walked step by step, checking variable values at breakpoints
  • You want to stop only on a certain value, such as when a counter passes a threshold, and a conditional breakpoint fits
  • An exception happens deep in the stack and the agent needs the error text and the place where the program stopped
  • You work in a language with a debugger already set up in VS Code and do not want to write a separate server for it
  • An agent in Claude Desktop or Cursor must see real values during a run, not only the code

Not a fit when

  • You do not work in VS Code: the server lives inside the editor and does not run without it
  • The project has no `.vscode/launch.json`, or its first configuration does not run the target file through `${file}`
  • You need another editor's debugger or debugging without an editor: the debugmcp entry covers VS Code plus a command line
  • The bug shows only in a production environment the editor is not attached to, and a local run does not reproduce it

Example request

The function longest_substring_with_k_distinct returns the wrong thing. Walk through it in the debugger step by step with breakpoints and find where the values diverge from what is expected

Limitations

The project is at version 0.1.2, and the repository's last change dates from December 20, 2025. MIT License. VS Code 1.96 or newer is required.

The agent works with code and values in the process the debugger started. Expressions in `evaluate` run in the context of the debugged program, so debug only projects you trust.

The extension listens on port 4711 (the `mcpDebug.port` setting) and creates a server with no explicit binding to `localhost`. If the port is reachable from the network, anyone who gets network access to it can call its tools, and the server has no access check.

The server starts together with VS Code (`mcpDebug.autostart` is on by default), and only one runs across several windows: the extension offers to hand it off to another window. Launch uses only the first configuration from `launch.json`.

Step order matters: set breakpoints before launching or while paused, and do not use `continue` to reach the first breakpoint.

How to disable. Turn off autostart with the `mcpDebug.autostart` setting or stop the server with the Claude Debugs For You: Stop Server command. To remove it fully, uninstall the extension from VS Code and delete the `debug` block from `claude_desktop_config.json` or the address from the client settings.

FAQ

How do I install the extension?

Get it from the VS Code Marketplace (publisher JasonMcGhee) or take the `.vsix` file from the repository releases. For the file, open the three dots in the extensions list and choose Install from VSIX. After installation the status bar shows a Claude Debugs For You item: a check mark means the server is running.

How do I connect Claude Desktop?

Run the Copy MCP Debug Server stdio path to clipboard command in VS Code and paste the path into `claude_desktop_config.json` as a `debug` server with the `node` command and an argument holding that path. Then restart Claude Desktop.

How do I connect Cursor?

Cursor works over SSE. Copy the address with the Copy MCP Debug Server sse address to clipboard command or type `http://localhost:4711/sse`, then refresh the server list in Cursor.

Which steps does the debug tool support?

Five step types: `setBreakpoint`, `removeBreakpoint`, `launch`, `continue` and `evaluate`. A breakpoint can carry a condition, and an expression is tied to a file and a line.

What if several VS Code windows are running?

A prompt appears. The server is handed off between windows without losing the connection, and you can turn autostart off and start the server with the Start Server item in the status menu.

How can I try the extension on an example?

Open the `examples/python` folder in VS Code and ask the agent to walk through the `longest_substring_with_k_distinct` function in the debugger. A simpler example sits next to it in `examples/python_simple`.

README in short

The repository shows how to install the extension and connect a client over stdio or SSE, and gives a sample prompt for the agent. It has video demos with Continue and Claude Desktop, a Continue setup with an experimental servers block and notes on building the extension and the package with `vsce package`. Sources are in `src` (the extension and server) and `mcp` (the stdio script), Python examples in `examples`, and the version history in `CHANGELOG.md`.
