DocsMint MCP
DocsMint lets agents search, read and edit knowledge base documents through 22 MCP tools, in the cloud or on your own Docker

Extended access
Why this level
- A key with write access lets the agent change knowledge base documents
- A global key opens all of the owner's documents, so a category key is better for an agent
- The cloud variant sends document content to the docsmint.com server
Install
- Works in
Manual install
codex mcp add docsmint --url https://docsmint.com/mcp --bearer-token-env-var HIAI_DOCS_API_KEYHosted DocsMint. The API key is created in the browser and kept in an environment variable.

What it does
DocsMint is a knowledge base for people and AI agents with a visual editor, Markdown, folders, categories and tags. Search is hybrid, and GraphRAG is included. Agents reach the same documents through MCP, REST, a typed SDK or a CLI. The repository holds the application itself, built on SvelteKit with a backend, and the MCP server. The MCP server exposes 22 tools, two prompts and three resources, and a ready document-manager skill ships with it. There are three ways to connect. DocsMint Cloud lives at `https://docsmint.com/mcp` (Streamable HTTP) with OAuth or an API key. A self-hosted instance runs through Docker Compose, and then MCP is served at `/mcp` on your domain with an `Authorization: Bearer` header. The third option is the `docsmint-mcp` stdio bridge from the `@hiai-gg/docsmint` package, which needs Bun 1.4.4 or newer. API keys are either global or scoped to a category. A category key limits the documents and operations open to the agent, separately for read, edit and write, so you can expose only the folder of knowledge that the agent needs.
Who it is for. Teams and solo developers who keep notes and documentation in one place and want to give Claude Code, Cursor or Codex access to them without handing out file system or database access.
Good fit when
- Project documentation lives in a knowledge base and the agent has to find answers there with hybrid search
- The agent should write work summaries into a document with access limited to one category
- You deploy your own documentation server through Docker and connect Codex with a Bearer key
- Your base holds many linked notes and GraphRAG search is useful
- The cloud service is more convenient: it connects through OAuth with no server to install
Not a fit when
- Plain Markdown files in the repository are enough and the agent already reads them
- You only need access to a local notes folder and a database-backed server is overkill
- You have no Docker Compose v2 and do not want to use the cloud
- You want a personal notes app with no agent integration
Example request
Find the deployment document in DocsMint and add a section on rolling back a releaseMCP
- Transport
- stdio, http
- Authentication
- API key
Environment variables
HIAI_DOCS_URLrequired- Address of your DocsMint API for the stdio bridge
HIAI_DOCS_API_KEYrequired, secret- Global or category key from Settings, раздел API
Limitations
- A self-hosted server needs Docker Compose v2 and an API key created in the app settings; the stdio bridge does not install the application.
- The `docsmint-mcp` bridge runs on Bun 1.4.4 or newer, and Node.js does not fit here.
- OAuth and refreshable tokens exist only in DocsMint Cloud; a self-hosted install uses a key in the Bearer header and does not accept a browser session as a key.
- Cloud workspaces and limits depend on the plan; details are in the connection guide on the site.
How to disable. Remove the `docsmint` entry from your agent's MCP settings and revoke the key in the app's Settings, раздел API. A self-hosted instance stops with `docker compose down`.
FAQ
How do I connect DocsMint to Codex or Claude Code?
For the cloud, use `codex mcp add docsmint --url https://docsmint.com/mcp --bearer-token-env-var HIAI_DOCS_API_KEY`. OAuth-capable clients connect through the browser with consent for the chosen workspaces.
Can I skip the cloud?
Yes. Bring the app up through Docker Compose, create a key in Settings, раздел API and use an address like `https://docs.example.com/mcp`. The stdio bridge needs Bun 1.4.4 and the variables `HIAI_DOCS_URL` and `HIAI_DOCS_API_KEY`.
What access does the agent get?
The access of its key. A global key opens all documents, while a category key limits documents and operations, with read, edit and write configured independently.
How many tools does the MCP server have?
Twenty-two, plus two prompts and three resources. The tools cover all 31 operations of the application and bounded batch actions.
What can DocsMint search do?
Search is hybrid, and GraphRAG covers linked notes. Documents are kept in a visual editor or Markdown and organized into folders, categories and tags.

README in short
The README starts with connecting the cloud, then covers the self-hosted Docker install, release history and reasons to pick DocsMint. Separate sections cover MCP, REST, SDK and CLI clients, category keys and configuring the public URL, origins and CORS.
