Extended access
Why this level
- Init appends a block to CLAUDE.md
- The Slack connector reads messages by a bot token
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add mcp/hippo-memoryDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

What it does
Hippo Memory keeps long-term agent memory in SQLite in the `.hippo/` folder and makes markdown mirrors. Installation: `npm install -g hippo-memory && hippo init`, and the MCP server runs with `npx -y hippo-memory mcp` over stdio. If the project has a `CLAUDE.md`, the init command adds a short block asking Claude to run `hippo context --auto` at the session start. There is a Slack connector (a `SLACK_BOT_TOKEN` is needed). Version 1.63.2 from 05.10.2026, MIT license.
Who it is for. For developers who want shared long-term agent memory in a project with readable files.
Good fit when
- You need long-term agent memory in a project
- You need markdown mirrors of memory
- You need an MCP server for memory over stdio
Not a fit when
- You cannot change the project CLAUDE.md: init adds a block to it
- You have a Node.js older than 22.16
Example request
Remember that our releases go out on Tuesdays and remind me at the start of the next sessionMCP
- Transport
- stdio
- Authentication
- not required
Environment variables
SLACK_BOT_TOKENrequired, secret- Environment variable SLACK_BOT_TOKEN, the value is set in the client or a .env file
Limitations
The init command appends a block to the project CLAUDE.md and the Slack connector reads messages by a bot token, so access is extended. The README has many self-measurements (tests, benchmarks) and we have not verified its figures. Memory is stored in the project, so do not publish the .hippo folder with personal data.
How to disable. Remove the server entry from the client, the package with npm uninstall -g hippo-memory, the block in CLAUDE.md and the .hippo folder.
FAQ
Where is the memory stored?
In SQLite in the project .hippo folder with markdown mirrors.
How do I launch MCP?
npx -y hippo-memory mcp over stdio or hippo mcp after global installation.
What does init do?
It creates the memory and adds a block about hippo context --auto to CLAUDE.md.
