An MCP server that gives Claude Desktop and other clients file tools, a shell and sub-agents in the style of Claude Code

Broad access
Why this level
- The `write`, `edit` and `run_command` tools change files and execute commands in the accessible directories
- The server reads every file in the allowed directories, including files with secrets
- With sub-agents enabled, task text goes to the model provider you chose
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add mcp/mcp-claude-codeDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

What it does
MCP Claude Code brings Claude Code-style abilities to any MCP client, such as Claude Desktop. The server gives the client 16 tools for working with a project. `read`, `write`, `edit` and `multi_edit` handle files. For search there is `grep` on ripgrep and `grep_ast`, which shows matches inside functions and classes. `run_command` executes commands and scripts, and `notebook_read` and `notebook_edit` `read` and `edit` Jupyter notebooks. The `think` tool gives the model room to reason without edits, and `batch` runs several calls in sequence or in parallel. `dispatch_agent` launches sub-agents that work in parallel in read-only mode. Their model is set in LiteLLM format, so any compatible provider or local server works. The server sees only the directories you allowed. The client asks for permission before file edits and command runs.
Who it is for. For people who work in Claude Desktop or another MCP client and want to edit project code right in the chat.
Good fit when
- Claude Desktop needs to read and edit the files of chosen projects and run commands in them
- You need structural code search: grep_ast shows matches together with the function or class that contains them
- You need to edit Jupyter notebooks: read cells with output, insert, change and delete cells
- A task should be split among sub-agents on a cheap or local LiteLLM model while the main client does something else
Not a fit when
- You already work in Claude Code itself: all of these tools are built in
- You need SSH access to remote servers: the server works with the local directories you allowed
- You need a persistent terminal with long processes and sessions: Desktop Commander MCP in the catalog covers that
- The machine only has Python below 3.12: the package requires Python 3.12 or newer
Example request
Use grep_ast to find where load_config is called, show the functions that contain it and fix the call in two placesMCP
- Transport
- stdio, sse
- Authentication
- not required
Limitations
You need Python 3.12 or newer. ripgrep is optional but speeds up search. The repository was last updated in August 2025, so the server may not support newer client features.
Sub-agents are off by default and need a model plus its provider key. The default command timeout is 120 seconds, set with the `--command-timeout` flag. The automatic installer configures only Claude Desktop, so other clients need a hand-written config. Sub-agents are read-only, so the main client makes edits based on their output.
How to disable. Remove the claude-code entry from claude_desktop_config.json, restart Claude Desktop and, if needed, run `pip uninstall mcp-claude-code`. You can also narrow access without removing it: drop extra allowed paths from the config.
FAQ
How do I install MCP Claude Code in Claude Desktop?
Run `uvx --from mcp-claude-code claudecode --install`: the command writes the server into the Claude Desktop config itself. For manual setup add an entry with the claudecode command and your project path.
How is MCP Claude Code different from Claude Code?
It is an MCP server with a similar toolset for any client, such as Claude Desktop. Claude Code itself remains a separate application with its own loop. Here permissions and directories are set through server flags.
How do I limit the server to a few folders?
Pass `--allow-path` once per allowed folder. The `--project` flag, also repeatable, names the projects the system prompt is built for. The current directory is allowed by default.
How do I enable sub-agents on a local model?
Add `--enable-agent-tool`, set the model with `--agent-model` in LiteLLM format and the local server address with `--agent-base-url`. The key goes in `--agent-api-key`. `--agent-max-iterations` and `--agent-max-tool-uses` cap iterations and tool calls.
What does the `batch` tool do?
It runs several tool calls in sequence or in parallel in one request, for example reading several files at once.

README in short
The README splits the abilities into five groups, from code understanding to search, and lists the 16 tools in a table. Installation lives in INSTALL.md, and a tutorial for version 0.3 is in TUTORIAL.md.
