Broad access
Why this level
- The agent gets write access to project assets: Blueprints, materials, configuration, builds and play in the editor
- Port 9316 is open on all network interfaces, and other devices on the same network can reach the server directly
Install
- Works in
Manual install
cd YourProject/Plugins && git clone https://github.com/tumourlove/monolith.git MonolithOr extract the release archive with precompiled DLLs into the same folder.

What it does
Monolith is a plugin for the Unreal Engine editor that starts an MCP server inside it and gives an agent about 1,400 actions. The actions are grouped into 26 namespaces, from Blueprints and materials to Niagara, AI and audio. Each namespace has one tool in the form blueprint_query, and the action is passed as a parameter. This scheme saves context. The agent calls monolith_discover to see what is available and monolith_guide to get working hints. It requests the parameter schema of a specific action separately, so the tool list stays compact. Besides project actions, the plugin indexes engine source code, more than a million symbols, and works with it fully offline. A reflection analysis layer answers queries about decisions, code hotspots, C++ links and replication. The Binaries folder holds two executables: the monolith_proxy.exe proxy keeps the agent session alive across editor restarts, and monolith_query.exe answers index queries without launching Unreal.
Who it is for. For Unreal Engine 5 game developers who hand Claude Code or Cursor the editing of Blueprints, materials and effects in an open project.
Good fit when
- You need to create a Blueprint or compile a material on the agent's command without hand-tuning graphs
- You want an engine source signature, an include path or a deprecation check before writing C++
- You want to assemble a Niagara effect or an animation state machine quickly from a description
- You need to learn which classes replicate and where OnRep handlers are unpaired
- You need the source index in a terminal or CI while the editor is closed, which monolith_query.exe provides
Not a fit when
- The project is on Unity, Godot or another Unreal version: the plugin builds for 5.7 and 5.8
- The computer sits on an untrusted network: the plugin's server is reachable from neighboring devices
- You want a small set of a few tools: Monolith exposes hundreds of actions
- No editor and no indexes are available: the main actions work only in a running Unreal
Example request
Through Monolith create a character Blueprint with a health component and compile it, then show build errors if there are any.MCP
- Transport
- http, stdio
- Authentication
- not required
Limitations
The plugin builds for Unreal Engine 5.7 and 5.8. The ready archive contains compiled DLLs tied to the engine version, so Blueprint-only projects need the archive for their version, while a source build fits both. The proxy executables are built for Windows, and the project wiki covers macOS and Linux options.
On first launch the index builds for 30 to 60 seconds. Unreal's built-in HTTP server cannot bind to a single address, so port 9316 is reachable from every device on the network, and CORS restricts browsers only. On an untrusted network the author advises blocking the port with a firewall or turning the MCP server off in the plugin settings.
The auto-updater is off by default. When turned on, it checks GitHub releases and verifies the archive checksum. The author calls the action count approximate and suggests reading the live figure from monolith_discover.
How to disable. Turn the MCP server off with the checkbox in the editor preferences under the Monolith plugin, or delete the Plugins/Monolith folder and the .mcp.json file from the project root.
FAQ
How do I connect Monolith to Claude Code?
Clone the repository into the project's Plugins folder, create an .mcp.json file next to the .uproject file with the command Plugins/Monolith/Binaries/monolith_proxy.exe, and open the editor. The log shows a line about listening on port 9316.
Why so few tools for over a thousand actions?
Each namespace registers one tool and the action itself is passed as a parameter, for example blueprint_query with create_blueprint. The agent spends no context on hundreds of names and gets the action list through monolith_discover.
Which Unreal Engine versions does the plugin fit?
5.7 and 5.8, from one source tree. Take the ready archive for your engine version, for example Monolith-vX.Y.Z-UE5.7.zip.
Can I query the index without launching the editor?
Yes. The monolith_query.exe program serves the engine source index, the project asset index and the Reflection Intelligence layer without launching Unreal. The author checks that its answers match those of the live server.
What does the monolith_proxy.exe proxy do?
It sits between the agent and the editor and keeps the session alive while Unreal restarts. The agent does not have to reconnect after every editor restart.
