Novamira: an MCP server for WordPress
Novamira
A WordPress plugin with an MCP server: the agent runs PHP and WP-CLI on your site, edits files and uses Gutenberg over OAuth or an app password
- 748 ★ on the repository
- Last commit
- AGPL-3.0
Broad access
Why this level
- The agent runs arbitrary PHP and WP-CLI, writes and deletes files and works with the site database with administrator rights
- Read mode limits only what Novamira offers, while access through administrator credentials stays full
Install
- Works in
Manual install
Do not install the plugin on a live site. Ask me to download the release ZIP from novamira.ai/download, upload it in WordPress through Plugins, Add New and activate it. Then open Novamira, Configuration, enable AI Abilities and connect the client following the instructions on that page. Start with reading: list the active plugins.

What it does
Novamira installs on a site as an ordinary WordPress plugin and turns it into an MCP server. The agent gets direct access to the site: it runs PHP with access to $wpdb, active plugins, the theme and the WordPress APIs, runs WP-CLI commands in the foreground and the background, and inspects and edits files. New PHP code can be tried in a recoverable sandbox. The feature list includes the Gutenberg block editor, media uploads, reusable skills, site context for the agent and design guidance. Authentication uses OAuth or a WordPress application password. Requests go straight between the client and your site and do not pass through Novamira servers. Terminal agents (Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI) connect through a separate Novamira CLI. Read mode, which keeps only the tools that do not write, is turned on with the paid Novamira Pro, and it can be turned off without it.
Who it is for. For WordPress developers and site owners who want Claude, Codex or Cursor to edit the theme, plugins and content on a test copy of the site.
Good fit when
- You need to find why a plugin breaks a page: the agent reads files and runs PHP on a dev copy
- You need to write functionality for a specific theme and test it in a sandbox with rollback
- Routine work is easier to hand off through WP-CLI, including long background jobs
- Pages have to be built and edited in the Gutenberg editor along with media uploads
- You want to connect a terminal agent (Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI) through Novamira CLI
Not a fit when
- A live production site without fresh backups: the README warns it is for dev and staging, always with backups
- WordPress older than 6.9 or PHP older than 8.0: those are the minimum requirements
- You need protection from the agent's actions: read mode is not a security feature
- You plan to install from the GitHub source archive: it lacks the Composer dependencies, so use the release ZIP
- You have no WordPress administrator account
Example request
Check which plugins are active on the dev site and find the one that adds an extra script to the home pageMCP

- stdio, http
- Authentication
- OAuth
Limitations
WordPress 6.9 or newer, PHP 8.0 or newer, an administrator account and HTTPS for remote connections are required; a local environment works without HTTPS. Install the release ZIP from novamira.ai, not the GitHub source archive. AGPL-3.0-or-later licence. Read mode is turned on with Novamira Pro. Last commit on October 15, 2026. In read mode six of Novamira's own abilities remain: agent-context, discover-abilities, get-ability-info, execute-ability, read-file and list-directory. Novamira Pro adds reading of posts, terms, users, comments, options and the database schema.
How to disable. Deactivate and delete the Novamira plugin in the WordPress Plugins screen, then remove the server from the MCP client configuration. Read mode can be turned off on the Novamira, Read Mode page or with wp novamira read-mode disable.
FAQ
How do I connect Claude Code to WordPress over MCP?
Install the Novamira plugin from the release ZIP, enable AI Abilities on the Novamira, Configuration page and connect the agent through Novamira CLI, described at novamira.ai/cli. MCP clients that connect over the network can use OAuth or an application password.
Do my requests pass through Novamira servers?
No. According to the README the connection runs directly between your AI client and the WordPress site; it is not a hosted proxy.
What is read mode?
A mode where only read tools remain: PHP execution, WP-CLI, file writes, uploads and Gutenberg are off. It is turned on with Novamira Pro and can be turned off on the Read Mode page without a licence. It is not a security feature and only limits what Novamira offers.
Which clients are supported?
Claude, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Antigravity, VS Code with GitHub Copilot and other MCP clients. Terminal agents connect through Novamira CLI.
What do I need to install Novamira?
WordPress 6.9 or newer, PHP 8.0 or newer, an administrator account and an MCP-compatible client or a terminal agent with Novamira CLI. Remote connections need HTTPS; a local environment does not.

README in short
The README opens with a warning to use it on dev and staging with backups. Then come features, requirements and three setup steps. A large separate section covers read mode: which abilities it keeps, which it removes and why it is no substitute for real protection. It ends with links to documentation, communities and contribution rules.
