Extended access
Why this level
- The agent deletes tracks, changes the project and overwrites render files on your disk
- REAPER's distant API opens the program to external scripts on this machine
Install
- Works in
Manual install
claude mcp add reaper -- reaper-mcp-serverFirst `pip install reaper-mcp-server` and enable the distant API in REAPER with the enable_reapy.py script.
Access and checks
How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
REAPER MCP Server controls the REAPER 7 and newer digital audio workstation over MCP. The README claims about 60 tools across projects, tracks, track templates, MIDI, FX and instruments, audio handling, mixing, rendering, mastering and analysis. The agent creates a project and tracks, sets tempo and time signature, writes MIDI parts, generates chord progressions and drum patterns, adds effects and changes their parameters, loads presets and runs volume and pan automation. `.RTrackTemplate` files are inserted with their exact FX state, routing and items. A mastering chain, a limiter and normalization make the final pass, while `render_project`, `render_stems`, `render_time_selection` and `render_regions` export the result. Analysis covers loudness, dynamics, spectrum, stereo field, transients and clipping. The link to REAPER goes through python-reapy.
Who it is for. Musicians and audio engineers who work in REAPER and want Claude to handle the routine of mixing, mastering and rough arrangements.
Good fit when
- You need a rough track: tempo, drums, a chord progression and bass on separate tracks
- Dozens of tracks must be renamed, colored and routed to buses
- Before delivering a master you want an analysis of loudness, clipping and stereo field
- Project stems have to be exported in a batch to given files
- A track template with an effect chain should land in the project at a given position
Not a fit when
- The workstation is not REAPER: there is a separate server for Ableton Live
- REAPER is older than version 7 or runs on another machine
- You need ear and taste in the final mix: an automatic mastering pass does not replace them
- A project is open but REAPER's distant API is not enabled
Example request
Create a 120 BPM project, add drum and bass tracks, write a four-bar Am–F–C–G progression and show the master loudness.MCP

Limitations
- REAPER 7 or newer running on the same machine and Python 3.10 or newer are required.
- Enable the distant API once: in REAPER run `scripts/enable_reapy.py` through the Run ReaScript item in the Actions menu and restart the program.
- The README disagrees on the tool count: 61 in the heading, 60 in the section.
- Verification means manual work in a real REAPER, as CONTRIBUTING requires: there are no automated tests without the program.
How to disable. Remove the server with `claude mcp remove reaper` or delete the reaper block from `claude_desktop_config.json`. The package is removed with `pip uninstall reaper-mcp-server`.
FAQ
How do I connect REAPER to Claude Code?
Install the package with `pip install reaper-mcp-server`, enable the distant API once with the `enable_reapy.py` script in REAPER and run `claude mcp add reaper -- reaper-mcp-server`. REAPER must be running.
Which REAPER and Python versions are required?
REAPER 7 or newer and Python 3.10 or newer. The link uses the python-reapy library, so REAPER's distant API must be enabled.
What can the agent do with audio in a project?
Import files, edit items, record and change pitch and playback rate. Mixing, automation, mastering and rendering of stems and regions follow.
Is there a debug mode?
Yes, running with the `--debug` flag enables verbose logging: `reaper-mcp-server --debug`. Without flags the server starts normally and waits for an MCP client.
Which analyses are available for a track?
Six tools: `analyze_loudness`, `analyze_dynamics`, `analyze_frequency_spectrum`, `analyze_stereo_field`, `analyze_transients` and `detect_clipping`. They report loudness, dynamics, spectrum, stereo field, transients and clipping.

README in short
The README lists requirements, install through pip and from source, a four-step REAPER distant API setup and connecting to Claude Desktop and Claude Code. It then groups tools into nine topics and adds contribution rules and the MIT license.
