Why this level
- The tool deploys PostgreSQL, a search web server and Docker containers, and an archive can be exposed publicly through Tor or HTTPS
- Texts and author names from the archives pass through the agent, and they can include personal data

What it does
Redd-Archiver turns compressed Reddit, Voat and Ruqqus dumps into a browsable archive. The tool loads data into PostgreSQL and builds HTML pages from the database with a mobile-first layout, full-text search and eleven color themes. It detects the platform from the file extension: for Reddit that is `.zst` JSON Lines from Pushshift or Arctic Shift, for Voat SQL dumps, for Ruqqus `.7z`. The archive is served in three modes. Static exports once and can be hosted anywhere, including GitHub Pages or a USB stick. Hybrid, the default, adds a search server on nginx, Flask and PostgreSQL. Dynamic renders pages from the database with no export step. Monthly Arctic Shift dumps keep it current: `reddarc.py --update` applies them to an existing archive and `--update-all` walks a folder of dumps. For agents the repository includes a FastMCP server. It builds 29 tools from the OpenAPI description of the archive's REST interface, exposes five resources (stats, top posts, communities, search help) and caps response size so the context does not overflow. The agent searches posts and comments, looks up users and computes aggregates over your archive.
Who it is for. For researchers, archivists and analysts who keep their own copy of Reddit communities and want to question it through Claude.
Good fit when
- You hold a dump of a subreddit and need a local archive with search
- A community could be shut down and you want its discussions saved for offline reading
- An agent should search posts, comments and authors in your archive without calling Reddit
- You want to keep the archive current from monthly dumps without a rebuild from scratch
- You want to publish a static archive on GitHub Pages or serve it as a Tor hidden service
Not a fit when
- You need fresh posts in real time: the archive updates from monthly dumps, and Reddit MCP servers cover live reading
- You have no PostgreSQL: it is required for import and search
- You need ready-made data: dumps have to be downloaded separately and the tool does not fetch them
- You plan to publish other people's data with authors' personal information without weighing the legal consequences
Example request
Find posts in the privacy subreddit archive from 2022 about password managers, show the five most discussed and summarize the commentsMCP
- Transport
- stdio
- Authentication
- not required
Environment variables
REDDARCHIVER_API_URL- Base URL of the archive's REST API, http://localhost:5000 by default
REDDARCHIVER_MAX_RESPONSE_SIZE- Maximum response size in KB before truncation, 50 by default
Limitations
Python 3.10 or newer and PostgreSQL are required. The tool does not download data for you: Reddit dumps come from Arctic Shift and Academic Torrents, Voat and Ruqqus from the Internet Archive. Dumps are large; see the performance documentation for memory and disk requirements.
The MCP server works only on top of a running archive search server: without it the tools get no data.
The project is released under the Unlicense. Rights to the community material belong to its authors and platforms, so weigh the legal terms before publishing an archive.
How to disable. Remove the reddarchiver block from your client settings and restart it. Stop the services with `docker compose stop mcp-server`, or the whole stack with `docker compose down`. The PostgreSQL database holding the archive is stored separately; delete it if you no longer need the archive.
FAQ
How do I connect Redd-Archiver to Claude Desktop?
Start the archive search server, then add a reddarchiver block to `claude_desktop_config.json` with the `uv` command and the arguments `--directory`, the path to the `mcp_server` folder, `run`, `python`, `server.py`. Set `REDDARCHIVER_API_URL` in `env`. For a remote archive you can pass `--api-url`.
Which platforms are supported?
Reddit from `.zst` dumps in Pushshift or Arctic Shift format, Voat from SQL dumps and Ruqqus from `.7z`. All three platforms can be mixed in one archive.
How do static, hybrid and dynamic modes differ?
Static exports pages once and runs on any host, but without search. Hybrid, the default, adds a search server and a REST API. Dynamic renders pages from PostgreSQL straight after import and adds filtering by flair and score.
How do I keep the archive updated?
`reddarc.py --update RS_2026-01.zst --comments-file RC_2026-01.zst` applies one month, and `--update-all` walks a folder of downloaded monthly dumps. Only tracked subreddits are imported and reruns are skipped by checksum.
How do I avoid overflowing the agent's context?
Tool descriptions carry warnings and guidance for the `limit`, `fields` and `max_body_length` parameters. Response size is capped, 50 KB by default, and `--max-response-size` changes the limit.
