Why this level
- The agent's queries go to the external server api.skyll.app
- A found SKILL.md enters the agent's context and can contain any instructions

In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add mcp/skyllDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
Skyll is an MCP server and REST API that lets an agent look up skills at the moment it needs them. The service gathers skills from skills.sh and its own community registry, fetches the full SKILL.md from GitHub and returns it as structured JSON ready to drop into context. Results are ranked on a 0 to 100 scale from query match, content and popularity, and duplicates from different sources are merged. The MCP server has four tools: search_skills searches by a natural-language query, add_skill returns the best skill by name or by a full owner/repo/skill path, get_skill fetches a specific skill by source and id, and get_cache_stats reports the cache state. The service can also pull extra files from a skill's references directory. The documented connection options are a hosted MCP endpoint and a Python client. The hosted server at api.skyll.app/mcp connects with a single configuration entry. The skyll Python package calls the same API from your code. Both options contact Skyll infrastructure; installing the Python client does not move search processing to your machine.
Who it is for. For agent developers and for people working in Claude Desktop or Cursor when the set of skills they need is not known in advance.
Good fit when
- An autonomous agent such as OpenClaw has to find a skill for the task on its own, for example tavily-search for fresh news or test-driven-development for tests
- You need a suitable skill’s text in the current session without permanently installing it into the agent directory
- You are building your own agent framework in Python and want to search skills from code through the skyll package
- You need reference files alongside skill instructions and want to inspect them before use
Not a fit when
- The set of skills is known in advance: it is simpler to install them once into the agent's skills directory
- You cannot send search queries to a third-party service: the hosted api.skyll.app receives the query text
- You need a security review of a found skill: Skyll returns the SKILL.md contents and does not audit them

Environment variables
GITHUB_TOKENsecret- A GitHub token for a self-hosted instance; raises the request limit when fetching SKILL.md files.
Limitations
An HTTP-capable MCP client is required; the Python library needs Python 3.10 or later. Hosted queries reach the service operator. Endpoint availability, terms and limits are separate from the source code’s Apache 2.0 license and need their own check.
Returned SKILL.md instructions have not been security-audited. Read commands and verify the source before use. Cache entries may return an older version, with a default lifetime of 86,400 seconds. The self-hosted MCP recipe has a dependency gap: its code imports fastmcp, which is missing from server extras. That local recipe is not established as a complete setup.
How to disable. Remove the skyll entry from mcpServers in the client configuration and restart it. For a self-hosted instance stop the uvicorn process.
FAQ
How do I connect Skyll to Claude Desktop or Cursor?
Add a skyll entry to the MCP configuration with a url field set to https://api.skyll.app/mcp. No install or keys are needed because the server is hosted; the search_skills, add_skill, get_skill and get_cache_stats tools appear after the client restarts.
How is add_skill different from search_skills?
search_skills returns a ranked list and the agent chooses from it. add_skill takes a plain name such as react-best-practices and returns the best match, or a full path like vercel-labs/agent-skills/vercel-react-best-practices for a direct lookup.
Where does Skyll get its skills?
From the skills.sh catalog and a shared community registry kept in the repository's registry/SKILLS.md. You can add your own skill with a pull request: it needs a valid SKILL.md following the Agent Skills specification and a description under 80 characters.
Does add_skill copy files into the agent directory?
It returns the selected skill’s text and metadata. This delivers instructions into context; permanent installation in a local directory is a separate step.
Is a GitHub token required to use Skyll?
Not for the hosted server. A self-hosted instance does not strictly need one, but with a token the GitHub request limit is higher. The community registry is switched by the ENABLE_REGISTRY variable and is on by default.

README in short
The community registry lives in the repository and accepts entries through pull requests. The server merges matches across sources so the agent receives one result per skill.
