Extended access
Why this level
- The agent reads and edits every cloud document in the account, and `delete_document` with `hard: true` and `delete_image` erase data for good.
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add mcp/xeditDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

What it does
xEdit is a free Markdown editor with live preview, links between notes, slash commands and to-dos. It runs in the browser and as a Mac app. An MCP server is built into the editor: an AI client connects to `https://xedit.me/api/mcp` and works with the document library and media library in plain language. For documents there are six tools: `list_documents`, `search_documents`, `get_document`, `create_document`, `update_document` and `delete_document`. For images and video there are `list_images`, `get_image`, `upload_image`, `upload_video` and `delete_image`. Every call is scoped to your account, so the AI sees and changes only your documents. When text changes, xEdit saves a version snapshot, and deletion sends a document to the trash by default. Authorization uses OAuth 2.1: the client opens the xEdit page, you sign in and press Allow. No keys need to be copied by hand.
Who it is for. People who keep notes and articles in Markdown and want to hand Claude or Cursor the search, rewriting and review of their documents.
Good fit when
- The library holds hundreds of notes, and a week-old article about Rust has to be found and its intro rewritten.
- The outcome of a chat with an agent is saved into a new document in the right category as Markdown.
- An image from the media library is inserted after the second paragraph without opening the editor.
- The model is shown an image from the media library through `get_image` with the `include_data` parameter so it can see it.
- A client's access is revoked in settings when a project or a laptop changes.
Not a fit when
- Notes sit in a local folder of `.md` files: MCP, version history and image upload work for cloud notes only.
- You need databases, boards or real-time collaborative editing: the author advises taking Notion.
- The agent cannot be trusted with deletion: `delete_document` with `hard: true` erases a document for good.
- The client only speaks SSE: the server answers over Streamable HTTP and does not support SSE.

Environment variables
AUTH_SECRETsecret- Needed only for self-hosting: signs sessions and MCP tokens.
Limitations
MCP works with cloud notes only: documents from browser storage or a local folder do not reach it. There is a single transport, Streamable HTTP, so the client has to speak HTTP and OAuth 2.1 with dynamic registration. The access token lives for an hour and the refresh token for 30 days, and after revocation an issued token works for an hour at most. The image and video tools work when `OSS` storage is configured on the server; limits are 10 MB per image and 100 MB per video. A self-hosted install needs a real HTTPS certificate and the `X-Forwarded-Host` and `X-Forwarded-Proto` headers passed through.
How to disable. Open Settings, then Authorized Apps, and press Revoke next to the client. In Claude Code the connection is removed with `claude mcp remove xedit`, in Cursor by deleting the `xedit` entry from `~/.cursor/mcp.json`.
FAQ
How do I connect xEdit to Claude Code?
Run `claude mcp add --transport http xedit https://xedit.me/api/mcp`. On the first tool call the authorization page opens: sign in to xEdit and press Allow. The `/mcp` command shows the connection state.
How do I connect xEdit to Claude Desktop and Cursor?
In Claude Desktop open Settings, then Connectors and Add custom connector, name it `xEdit` and paste the server address. In Cursor add an entry with `type: http` and the same address to `~/.cursor/mcp.json`, then press connect.
What can the agent do with documents?
List them, search titles and text, read, create, change the title, text and category, and delete. Deletion is soft by default: the document goes to the trash and can be restored, while `hard: true` erases it for good.
How do I revoke a client's access?
In xEdit open Settings, then Authorized Apps and press Revoke. The client has to authorize again, and tokens already issued stop working within an hour.
Can I host the server myself?
Yes, the project is MIT licensed. On your own domain you need HTTPS, the `X-Forwarded-Host` and `X-Forwarded-Proto` headers passed through and a reachable `/.well-known/` path. Change `AUTH_SECRET` with care: every issued token becomes invalid.
