What it does
Claude Code mods is a collection of plugins that use Claude Code hooks to show what is going on in a session. Each mod installs on its own, so you take only the ones you want. Some mods print lines above the prompt that update as the session runs. context-bar draws context window fill as a colored bar, and usage-meter shows 5-hour and 7-day plan usage. cache-clock counts down the prompt cache, and agent-radar lists running subagents and background shells. Others watch actions. blast-radius holds `rm -r`, force pushes and migrations and lists the files that would go. If nobody answers in 60 seconds, the command is cancelled. review-watch shows a running code review from Codex or a subagent and lists findings when it ends, and md-preview renders edited Markdown files like GitHub. For fun there are YouTube Shorts, Snake and a Spotify player.
Who it is for. For heavy Claude Code users who want to see more of what is happening in a session right in the terminal.
Good fit when
- A session runs for a long time and you want to see what fills the context window and when it compacts
- You need to watch the 5-hour and weekly plan limits and know when they reset
- The agent launches subagents and background commands and you lose track of what is running
- Before a destructive command you want a list of affected files and a question to you
- You want to pick mods from a checklist and turn any of them off by unticking, with the settings kept
Not a fit when
- You run Claude Code older than 2.1.287: the set needs a newer version
- You need protection that works in other agents: the mods are built for Claude Code only
- Your terminal cannot show images: md-preview needs Chrome and a terminal that displays images
Example request
Show which commands `npx claude-code-mods@latest --pick context-bar,blast-radius --dry-run` would run, then install those two mods for this projectLimitations
- Needs Claude Code 2.1.287 or newer. Some mods need more: Chrome, GitHub CLI, a connector or a key, and each mod has its own list of requirements.
- openai-balance needs an OpenAI organization Admin key. now-playing works only on macOS with the Spotify app.
- The glance, merge-gate, rulebook-guard and session-saver mods are built around the author's own tools. The author suggests forking them and changing the rules to yours.
- Mods by other people live in separate marketplaces and are not maintained here. The author advises reading their code before you install.
- The installer changes the Claude profile that the `claude` command uses in this shell. For another profile set CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR.
How to disable. Run `npx claude-code-mods@latest` again and untick the mod: it is disabled and its settings are kept. Restart Claude Code after any change.
FAQ
How do I install Claude Code mods?
Run `npx claude-code-mods@latest`. A checklist opens that says what each mod adds; tick the ones you want and press Enter. `--project` installs for the current project only, `--dry-run` prints the `claude` commands without running them, and `--pick a,b` turns on exactly the listed mods. Restart Claude Code afterwards.
How do I try a mod without installing it?
Clone the repository and run `claude --plugin-dir mods/context-bar`, substituting the mod's folder. A manual install takes two commands: `claude plugin marketplace add hamzafer/claude-code-mods` and `claude plugin install context-bar@claude-code-mods`.
What does blast-radius stop?
`rm -r`, force pushes and migrations. The mod shows which files they would delete and cancels the command if you do not answer within 60 seconds.
How do I reorder the lines above the prompt?
Press o in the checklist, move the cursor with the arrows or j and k, and move a band with Shift plus the arrows or K and J. Enter saves the order to bands.json inside the claude-code-mods folder of the Claude config. Restart Claude Code to apply it.
What does md-preview need?
Chrome and a terminal that displays images. The mod renders the Markdown files Claude edits like GitHub, with before and after next to the diff. The command is `/md`.
