Extended access
Why this level
- The plugin connects MCP servers that call AWS services and external databases with your credentials.

How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
This Amazon Web Services repository collects skills, MCP servers and reference agents for healthcare and life sciences. The `hcls-agents` plugin attaches to Claude Code or Codex the skills from `skills/` (variant interpretation, biomarkers, clinical protocol drafting, literature review) and the servers from `.mcp.json`: AWS Knowledge, AgentCore docs, Strands docs and AWS HealthOmics. A separate catalog of 36+ reference agents for Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and platform guides for Kiro and Amazon Quick sit alongside. Deploying agents to AWS is not required for the skills to work.
Who it is for. Developers building solutions for clinics, biotech companies and research groups who create agents on AWS and want ready-made domain skills.
Good fit when
- Genomic variants must be interpreted and checked against ontologies.
- A team drafts a clinical study protocol.
- A researcher reviews literature on biomarkers and pathways.
- A platform group builds an agent on Bedrock AgentCore and wants a reference.
Not a fit when
- A certified medical product or patient-facing clinical decision tool is needed.
- The task has nothing to do with healthcare or life sciences.
- AWS cloud services cannot be used.
Example request
Look up human insulin in UniProt, give its identifier and outline how to interpret genetic variants for that gene.Limitations
The repository is being repositioned: the agent catalog is split into individual skills and MCP servers, so the contents change. Some servers (biomedical databases, ontologies) live in `mcp-servers/` and connect separately, and certain agents need infrastructure with Redshift and a Bedrock knowledge base. HealthOmics and other AWS services require your own credentials and incur costs. Output does not replace a physician's or expert's judgment.
How to disable. Run `/plugin uninstall hcls-agents` and remove the plugin source with the marketplace command. Delete any stacks deployed to AWS and separate MCP connections yourself.
FAQ
How do I install the plugin in Codex?
Run `codex plugin marketplace add aws-samples/amazon-bedrock-agents-healthcare-lifesciences`, then `codex plugin install hcls-agents`.
Which MCP servers connect by default?
AWS Knowledge, AgentCore Docs, Strands Docs and AWS HealthOmics from the plugin's `.mcp.json`. The rest live in `mcp-servers/`.
Does it work with Cursor?
The README points to the guides in `platforms/` or to `./platforms/setup.sh`; they cover Kiro, Cursor and Amazon Quick.
How is the plugin different from AWS Agent Toolkit?
The plugin supplies healthcare domain knowledge, while AWS Agent Toolkit handles infrastructure: deployment, IAM roles, guardrails. Install both.
Do I need to deploy the agents?
No. Skills and MCP servers work without deployment; the catalog agents serve as references for Bedrock AgentCore.

README in short
The toolkit has three paths: coding assistants with skills and MCP, end-user platforms such as Amazon Quick, and deployment of reference agents on Bedrock AgentCore.
