Broad access

Why this level

  • The skills describe DDL, DML and COPY INTO, so the agent can change warehouse schema and data
  • Work runs under your Azure sign-in with a token for api.fabric.microsoft.com
  • The plugin attaches remote Fabric MCP servers, including one that executes SQL queries
All reasons and checks

microsoft/skills-for-fabric

Install

Manual install

/plugin marketplace add microsoft/skills-for-fabric
/plugin install fabric-skills@fabric-collection

Microsoft's recommended route. For Power BI install powerbi-authoring@fabric-collection instead of fabric-skills.

What it does

A set of Microsoft skills and agents that teaches an AI assistant to work with Microsoft Fabric. The skills cover SQL data warehouse, Spark and Lakehouse, Power BI semantic models, Eventhouse and KQL, Eventstreams, Dataflows Gen2, catalog search, migration scenarios and medallion architecture. Each workload has its own skill: sqldw-cli, spark-cli, eventstream-cli, synapse-migration, e2e-medallion-architecture. sqldw-cli works as a dispatcher with three modes, authoring, consumption and operations, each with its own reference file. Alongside sit five agent roles (FabricAdmin, FabricAppDev, FabricDataEngineer, FabricIQ, FabricMigrationEngineer) and a configuration of remote Fabric MCP servers.

Who it is for. For data engineers, administrators and BI developers who work in Microsoft Fabric and want to drive it from Copilot CLI, Claude Code or Cursor.

Good fit when

  • You need to create a table in a Fabric Warehouse, load data with COPY INTO or diagnose a failed query
  • You have to design a medallion architecture for a dataset, as in the NYC taxi example
  • You want to build a Power BI semantic model and a PBIP report through the powerbi-authoring bundle
  • A migration from Synapse, Databricks, HDInsight or data pipelines to Fabric is ahead
  • You need to estimate Fabric costs or find capacity (CU) spikes in Capacity Metrics

Not a fit when

  • Your data does not live in Fabric: the skills describe its API and T-SQL dialect
  • You want a single skill through a Copilot CLI plugin: plugins install as whole bundles, use APM for one skill
  • You have no Azure sign-in: most operations need az login and a token for api.fabric.microsoft.com
  • You need Power BI reports outside Fabric and outside the PBIP format: that is a separate bundle, not the main one

Example request

Use Microsoft Fabric skills to design a medallion architecture for NYC taxi data

Limitations

Most operations require an Azure sign-in (az login) and a token for api.fabric.microsoft.com, and some workloads need their own endpoints and token audiences. The skills tell the agent to add an x-ms-fabric-skill header with the skill name to every Fabric API call, which is Microsoft telemetry. Microsoft names the GitHub Copilot CLI plugin as the main route; in Claude Code the fabric-collection marketplace counts as third-party and updates only once auto-update is enabled. Availability of Fabric in Russia should be checked against Microsoft's terms: the sources say nothing about it.

How to disable. Remove the plugin from the /plugin menu and drop the fabric-collection marketplace. If you installed via APM, delete the skill from the skills list in apm.yml and re-run apm install; apm uninstall removes the whole package.

FAQ

How do I install Microsoft Fabric Skills in Claude Code?

Run /plugin marketplace add microsoft/skills-for-fabric, then /plugin install fabric-skills@fabric-collection. Auto-update is a one-time switch: /plugin, Marketplaces, fabric-collection, Enable auto-update.

What is the difference between the fabric-skills and powerbi-authoring bundles?

fabric-skills holds the main set: authoring, consumption, operations, migrations and end-to-end architectures. powerbi-authoring packages Power BI semantic models, reports and PBIP workflows on their own. The persona bundles fabric-authoring, fabric-consumption and fabric-operations are retired.

Can I install a single skill such as sqldw-cli?

The Copilot CLI plugin installs a whole bundle, so use APM for one skill: apm install microsoft/skills-for-fabric --skill sqldw-cli --target claude. All Fabric agents are installed along with it.

Why do the skills come with Fabric MCP servers?

Skills give procedures and reference, while MCP servers give live access to data and APIs. The repository configures FabricIQ, powerbi-modeling-mcp and fabric-sqlendpoint with an execute_query tool.

Do I need an Azure sign-in?

Yes, for most operations. The README starts with az login and az account get-access-token --resource https://api.fabric.microsoft.com, and SQL, Spark, Power BI and KQL workflows may need their own endpoints and token audiences.

README in short

The README starts with installation through the GitHub Copilot CLI marketplace and two bundles, then covers updating, auto-update in Copilot CLI and Claude Code, and installing a single skill through APM with a flags table. After that come the bundle list, example prompts, sign-in with the Azure CLI, how skills relate to MCP servers and links to config files for Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Codex and Gemini CLI. It ends with the vulnerability reporting route and the MIT license.
