What it does
Open Design Agent Kit helps an agent choose a design workflow and prepare a brief. Its MCP server supplies instructions, visual styles and examples. The agent uses its own file tools to create output in your project. The kit supports prototypes, presentations and marketing materials. A chosen style is retained for later work in the same project. Preview comments can target individual elements and be sent to the agent for revision.
Who it is for. For developers and designers who want design work in their existing agent and outputs alongside code.
Good fit when
- Start a landing page with a selected visual system.
- Turn source material into a presentation while checking facts.
- Compare visual directions within one project.
- Review a prototype through specific comments before moving it into application components.
Not a fit when
- You need output without the required MCP and agent file tools.
- Generated materials must not be written into the repository.
- You expect a mockup to prove accessibility and correctness of the whole application.
Example request
Prepare two page-structure directions from project material, choose a style and show a preview for comments.Limitations
Codex requires MCP support and Node.js 18 or later; the skill alone does not provide the kit’s tools without the server. Exporting images, PDF and PowerPoint requires Chrome, Edge or Chromium, while video needs FFmpeg. Initialization writes generated skills into the project; if a Codex configuration already exists, add the displayed MCP snippet yourself. Before publishing third-party assets or brand examples, check whether their reuse is permitted.
How to disable. Disable the client plugin and MCP connection and remove unneeded skills. Outputs in `.open-design/` remain in the project.
FAQ
Does it need another model key?
No. Your agent’s existing model does the work; no additional kit account is required.
How do I add MCP manually?
For Codex, use `codex mcp add open-design -- npx -y @feimacode/open-design-agent-kit-mcp`. Add skill instructions separately.
Is the chosen style retained?
Yes. The active visual system persists in workspace settings until switched or cleared.
What happens when `init` is repeated?
Generated skills refresh while handwritten skills are preserved. Review changes before continuing.
Can I start from a source document?
Yes. Source-based workflows read the material and first prepare an outline for user review before building.
Is every listed recipe ready to use?
No. Some recipes can be stubs and must not be treated as complete workflows.

README in short
Integrations use native client mechanisms: VS Code tools, a Claude Code plugin or Codex skills. Outputs, comments and configuration are stored as files that can be reviewed in Git.
