Install

In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI

npx skillfoxx add skills/builder-skills

Access and checks

How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

  • The npx installer writes files into the project and into the agent's skill folders
  • The project-docs skill edits changelog.md, files.md and task.md on its own from git history

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

builder-skills bundles 17 skills for developers who write a Convex backend. Most of them explain the platform the way its documentation does: validators on every function, reads through indexes instead of filters, idempotent mutations, HTTP actions that verify signatures and migrations that do not take the app down. There are separate skills for schedules, file storage, realtime, agents on Convex and a security check before release. The other skills set the order of work. Before coding the agent writes a short PRD in the prds folder, tracks tasks in task.md and after every change updates the changelog and the file list from git evidence. The git-safety skill forbids dangerous commands without explicit consent, and avoid-feature-creep pulls the agent back to the task boundaries. Every skill is short, and details live in reference files the agent loads on demand. The main convex skill works as a router and names the skill to load for the task.

Who it is for. For Convex developers working in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or OpenCode who want the agent to follow platform rules and keep project docs up to date.

Good fit when

  • The agent writes filter instead of withIndex in Convex, skips the returns validator or schedules api functions instead of internal ones
  • You are setting up a webhook or REST route on Convex HTTP actions with signature checks
  • A schema migration on live data is coming: renaming a field or backfilling new ones
  • You need a quick security pass before release: auth in public functions and exposed data
  • You want the agent to write a PRD first and keep task.md, changelog.md and files.md in sync with git history

Not a fit when

  • The project is not on Convex: most of the seventeen skills are tied to its API
  • You do not need a process with a PRD and task.md in the repo root: then install only the Convex skills one by one
  • You need React frontend skills without Convex: the set does not cover them

Example request

Add an orders table with an index by user and a create-order mutation to our Convex app, and write a short PRD first.

Limitations

This is the author's personal set, tuned to their way of working; the official Convex skills live in another repository. The skills point the agent to https://docs.convex.dev/llms.txt for the current API, so without network access they rely on their own rules only.

The install-templates command creates AGENTS.md, files.md, changelog.md, task.md and prds/lessons.md in the project root and does not overwrite existing files. The process details assume Convex and git-based development: without commit history the project-docs skill has nothing to confirm.

How to disable. Remove the Claude Code plugin with the /plugin command, and remove skills from npm or skills.sh by deleting the skill folders in .claude/skills, .codex/skills or .cursor/skills. Files created by install-templates stay in the project and can be deleted by hand.

FAQ

How do I install builder-skills in Claude Code?

Run /plugin marketplace add waynesutton/builder-skills, then /plugin install builder-skills@waynesutton. The terminal commands claude plugins marketplace add and claude plugins install give the same result. The plugin updates automatically.

How do I install builder-skills in Codex or Cursor?

Run npx @waynesutton/builder-skills install-all --target codex or --target cursor. Skills land in .codex/skills or .cursor/skills. OpenCode has its own opencode target, other folders take an arbitrary path, and the --link flag creates symlinks instead of copies.

What does the install-templates command do?

It puts the starter files AGENTS.md, files.md, changelog.md, task.md and prds/lessons.md in the project root and two editable skills, dev and help, in .claude/skills. It overwrites nothing that already exists.

How is builder-skills different from the official Convex skills?

The author calls the set their own opinion on building with Convex and links separately to the official skills in the get-convex/convex-agent-plugins repository. Besides Convex there are skills for PRDs, project documentation and safe work with git.

Which commands does the git-safety skill forbid?

reset --hard, checkout -- ., clean -fd and stash drop without the user's explicit yes to that exact command. The skill reads "undo" as editing the file and does not allow switching to an old version through checkout.

README in short

The README explains three ways to install and what to do afterwards, lists the skills in a table with use conditions and shows how a single skill is built: a short SKILL.md plus reference files loaded on demand. A separate section describes the package's programmatic interface and the repository layout.

# Convex

Start here, pick the matching skill below, and load it. If nothing matches, the rules at the bottom still apply.

## Pick a skill

| Skill | Load when |
| --- | --- |
| convex-best-practices | general patterns, project structure, "is this the Convex way" |
| convex-functions | queries, mutations, actions, internal functions, error handling |
| convex-schema-validator | tables, indexes, validators, `v.*` types, schema changes |
| convex-realtime | useQuery, optimistic updates, pagination, presence, rerender churn |
| convex-http-actions | webhooks, REST endpoints, `convex/http.ts`, Stripe or Clerk callbacks |
| convex-file-storage | uploads, upload URLs, serving files, storage cleanup |
| convex-cron-jobs | crons.ts, runAfter, runAt, batching, a cron that is not firing |
| convex-migrations | backfills, renaming fields, schema evolution with live data |
| convex-agents | AI agents, threads, tools, streaming, RAG with `@convex-dev/agent` |
| convex-component-authoring | building a reusable component package, `defineComponent` |
| convex-security-check | fast pre ship audit: auth on public functions, exposed data |
| convex-security-audit | deep review: authorization model, injection, rate limits, secrets |
| avoid-feature-creep | scope pushback, MVP cuts, "just one more feature" |
| project-workflow | multi step tasks, PRDs in prds/, task.md, plans for review |
| project-docs | syncing task.md, changelog.md, files.md with shipped code |
| git-safety | revert, undo, reset, checkout, clean, stash, force push |

Two skills often apply at once. Load the domain skill for the code and the process skill for the workflow, for example convex-functions plus project-workflow.

## Rules that hold everywhere

- Every function declares `args` and `returns` validators, including internal ones.
- Read through `withIndex`. `.filter()` on a table scan is a bug waiting for data.
- Mutations are idempotent. Check current state, return early when there is nothing to do.
- Schedule and cron only `internal.*` functions. Never `api.*`.
- Never call `Date.now()` inside a query. Pass time in as an argument.
- Use `npx convex dev` for development. Do not run `npx convex deploy` unless asked.
- Fetch https://docs.convex.dev/llms.txt before trusting memory about an API.

## Do not

- Edit anything under `convex/_generated/`.
