What it does
GC Minimal Zine Poster turns a theme, sentence, article idea, object, mood, photograph or set of references into a sparse vertical poster on aged paper. The skill picks the mode itself: generate, photo input, reference analysis, prompt-only or analysis followed by generation. In generate mode it reduces the request to one visual metaphor, chooses a layout variant, a focal-element type, a typography treatment, a paper tone and one bright accent color, compiles a four-paragraph prompt and calls the host's built-in image generation. The signature look is set by rules: a 3:5 canvas, 70 to 90 percent negative space, one small subject or event, serif, typewriter or monospaced type, and xerox, risograph, halftone and scanned-paper defects. The skill inspects the finished image at full size and as a thumbnail, and if the accent is lost, the poster turned commercial or a stray symbol appeared, it tightens the prompt once and regenerates. When a photograph is attached, the skill assigns it a role: edit target, reference or insert. It then picks a preservation level, high, medium or low, and compares the result with the source after generation. In analysis mode it describes the traits it observes in the references, separates fixed rules from variable ones and from residue of individual samples, and returns a reusable prompt without copying anyone's text or composition.
Who it is for. For designers, content creators and marketers who make posters, covers and article illustrations in Codex in one quiet style and want the prompt together with the picture.
Good fit when
- You need a poster or cover for a theme or quote in a quiet paper-zine style with plenty of empty space
- You want only a ready prompt for an image generator, without the picture itself
- You have a folder of references and want repeatable style rules, separated from incidental details
- A photo of a person, pet or product has to become a poster while staying recognizable
- You need a series of posters in one visual family but with different layouts, not copies of a single template
Not a fit when
- You need advertising with a dense layout, glossy mockups, neon or 3D graphics: the skill explicitly excludes them
- Your environment has no built-in image generation: without it the skill returns only a prompt, and picture modes also need image inspection
- You need long clean text on the poster: generators distort it, the skill advises keeping captions short
- You need vector layouts or editable layers: the result is a raster image
Example request
Use $gc-minimal-zine-poster-v0-3 to make a poster about a rainy secondhand bookstoreLimitations
The skill is built for Codex or another environment with skill support, image inspection and built-in generation. The package has no scripts, fonts, keys or downloaded resources, so picture quality and photo preservation depend on the model in your environment. If a recognizable subject cannot be preserved even on the second attempt, the skill reports the limitation and does not present the result as a success.
The skill is invoked as `gc-minimal-zine-poster-v0-3`, and the install folder and the name field in SKILL.md must match. The old 0.1 version installs beside it in a separate folder, and updating on top of it causes a name conflict. Some routing rules and the answer captions are written in Chinese. Version 0.3.1 followed a user report that an abstract word in a composition description was read literally and produced a stray nautical symbol. MIT license.
How to disable. Delete the `~/.codex/skills/gc-minimal-zine-poster-v0-3` folder and restart Codex. Finished posters are stored separately, where your environment saved them, and the skill does not touch them.
FAQ
How do the modes differ?
Generate returns the picture, the final prompt, the chosen recipe and a short note. Photo input adds role assignment and a preservation check. Reference analysis returns observed traits, fixed and variable rules and a reusable prompt without generating. Prompt-only mode hands back four paragraphs without a picture.
What does the photo preservation level mean?
High keeps the face, proportions, pose, distinguishing marks and product geometry, so the skill prefers cutting from the source photo over redrawing. Medium keeps the main subject and its defining traits but lets the crop and surface change. Low takes only mood and visual grammar from the photo. People, pets, characters and products default to high.
Why do posters not repeat one to one?
variation-engine.md defines layout families, focal-element types, type treatments, textures and accent colors, and when making several posters the skill changes at least the layout, the focal-element structure and the type distribution. It is also told not to fall back to a tiny centered photo with blue dots and microtext.
How do I update from version 0.3.0?
The name and folder did not change. If the install is a clean Git checkout, `git -C ~/.codex/skills/gc-minimal-zine-poster-v0-3 pull --ff-only` is enough. If the folder has local edits, install a fresh copy separately and compare the changes before replacing anything.
What is in the repository besides SKILL.md?
Five files in references (style system, prompt compiler, variation engine, reference analysis, quality gate), evals/evals.json with test requests, Codex interface metadata in agents/openai.yaml and six example posters made by the author, plus the description in Chinese and Japanese.

Original SKILL.md
--- name: gc-minimal-zine-poster-v0-3 description: Generate or analyze poetic paper-texture minimal zine posters with large negative space, a small editorial collage or focal element, experimental typography, and one clear color accent. Use when the user gives a theme, sentence, article, mood, object, photo, content brief, reference images, or an image folder and wants a final poster image, a production-ready image prompt, reusable style rules, or varied layouts that stay in one visual family. --- # Minimal Zine Poster v0.3.1 Turn content or visual references into a coherent paper-poster system. Preserve the original production contract: unless the user explicitly asks for analysis or prompt-only output, return both a final image-generation prompt and the generated raster image. ## Route The Request Choose the smallest mode that satisfies the request: - **Generate Mode — default:** theme, sentence, article, object, mood, photo, or brief → visual metaphor → prompt → generated image → inspection. - **Photo Input Mode — Generate subflow:** a supplied photograph that should affect the output → classify its role and preservation level → pass the actual image into generation → inspect both poster quality and source preservation. - **Reference Analysis Mode:** reference images or a folder plus a request to analyze, extract, or systematize the style → evidence-based style rules and reusable prompt. Do not generate an image unless requested. - **Prompt-only Mode:** use only when the user explicitly asks for a prompt without image generation. - **Analyze + Generate:** when the user asks to learn from references and make a new poster, run Reference Analysis first, then Generate Mode with the extracted system. If the intent is ambiguous but clearly asks to “做一张”, use Generate Mode. Do not stop to ask about choices the skill can make safely. ## Load The Relevant References - Read `references/style-system.md` for every mode. - Read `references/prompt-compiler.md` for Generate and Prompt-only modes. - Read `references/variation-engine.md` before choosing a generation recipe or batch plan. - Read `references/reference-analysis.md` whenever reference images or folders are supplied for analysis. - Read `references/quality-gate.md` before returning a generated image or style analysis. ## Source And Reference Boundaries - Inspect actual supplied images before making claims about their dimensions, ratios, layout, color, or texture. - Separate observed traits from interpretation. Use file metadata for dimension and ratio claims when possible. - Do not copy source text, brands, watermarks, signatures, exact dates, exact locations, or an exact composition from reference-only images. - User-supplied text may be placed in the new poster when the user explicitly asks for it. Keep it short because image models distort long text. - For reference-only images, learn the visual grammar rather than copying the source identity, exact subject, wording, or composition. For edit targets, preserve the declared subject invariants and change only what the selected preservation level permits. - If files are missing or unreadable, state the limitation instead of inventing an analysis. ## Photo Input Mode Use this mode whenever a user-supplied photograph should materially affect the generated poster. Before compiling the prompt, assign every supplied image one role: - **Edit target:** the photograph or its recognizable subject must appear in the final poster. - **Reference image:** use only its style, color, composition, texture, or mood; do not preserve its exact subject or identity. - **Supporting insert:** use one specified person, object, texture, or fragment from the photograph inside a new composition. Classify from observable wording: - “把这张照片做成海报”, “基于这张图改”, or “保留这个人、产品、宠物” → edit target. - “参考这张图的风格、配色、构图” → reference image.
