What it does
oil-icon picks a style and metaphors for a product's feature list, draws one 4x4 sheet on a grey backdrop and slices it into separate files. The skill then removes the background from each file. The style comes from nine built-in presets: linear, single-colour filled, colour blocks, cartoon, isometric, 3D, sticker, realistic objects and animal badges. You can tweak a preset, fit it to a brand from design tokens, a logo and screenshots, or describe a direction in words. Once the style is approved, the palette and construction rules are frozen and new icons follow them. All icons come from one generation, so the model sees the whole set and keeps line weight, corner radius and colour consistent. One pass is not enough for full uniformity. That is why the skill inspects every icon on a high-contrast backdrop and looks for grey fringes and bleed between neighbouring cells.
Who it is for. For designers and developers who need a branded set of illustrative icons for features, categories, cards and empty states.
Good fit when

Not a fit when
- You need small functional 16–24 px glyphs for buttons: a vector library such as Lucide fits better
- You need one simple vector icon as SVG: the skill outputs raster PNGs
- The agent has no image generator and no provider key: there is nothing to draw the sheet with
- You need a hard uniformity guarantee without manual review: one generation does not give it

The skill does not draw by itself: the sheet comes from the agent's image tool, then a Codex CLI fallback, then an external API. For OpenAI Images the script reads `OPENAI_API_KEY`, and that API is not reachable from Russia. Slicing needs Python dependencies installed by `scripts/setup.sh`, and the rembg model is pulled in for soft edges when needed. The key setup page requires Node.js 22.18 or newer. The result stays a raster PNG, and a 9-cell sheet must be requested with the `--grid 3` flag.
How to disable. Delete the oil-icon folder from the agent's skills directory. Keys saved through the setup page live in the system credential store and are removed there.

How do I install oil-icon in Claude Code?

How many icons do I get, and can I ask for fewer?
A 4x4 sheet gives 16 icons by default. For 9, pick a 3x3 sheet and pass `--grid 3`. For any other smaller count the skill still draws a 4x4 sheet: the requested icons go first and the remaining cells stay empty grey.
How is oil-icon different from a vector icon library?
A library such as Lucide ships ready-made monochrome interface glyphs. oil-icon draws illustrative icons for your product in a chosen manner, from linear to 3D, and keeps the style through a frozen palette. For small 16–24 px buttons a library is handier.
How does the skill remove the background?
For hard-edged styles it removes the background by colour, for soft 3D and sticker styles it uses a background-removal model. The slicer keeps only the central subject of each cell so fragments of neighbouring icons do not end up in the file.
Do I need an API key?
If the agent has a built-in image generator, no external key is needed. Otherwise the skill calls an external provider, and the key is entered on a local setup page, so it never has to go into chat.
