OpenClaw Documentation Skill
An installable skill that gives an agent the full official OpenClaw documentation with progressive disclosure and a daily-synced snapshot
Low risk
We rate an entry low when it mostly gives the agent instructions and reference material.
Why this level
- The skill consists of documentation and lookup instructions, with no runnable code
Install
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add skills/openclaw-documentation-skillDetects the agents on your machine, checks the risk and pins the version.
Other ways to install
Assembled automatically, review before installing.

What it does
The skill turns the official OpenClaw documentation into a local source of truth for the agent. GitHub Actions mirrors the upstream docs directory daily, records the exact revision in SOURCE.json, and builds compact topic catalogs. The agent moves from SKILL.md to the index, then to a single topic catalog, and reads at most one to three relevant documents, so the whole doc set never loads into context at once. Exact error text, CLI commands, and configuration keys are searched directly across the references directory, bypassing the router. An installed snapshot does not hit the network on ordinary questions and updates only when the installer or git pull is run.
Who it is for. For people who install, configure, and maintain OpenClaw and want an agent grounded in the current official documentation.
Good fit when
- You need an answer about OpenClaw install, the gateway, channels, or model providers
- You need to work through a CLI error or a configuration key from the docs
- You want the agent to cite the official documents rather than guess
Not a fit when
- The project is unrelated to OpenClaw
- You need documentation for a version different from the pinned snapshot
Example request
Using the OpenClaw docs, explain how to check gateway health and cite the local document pathsLimitations
The skill is only useful together with OpenClaw and reflects the pinned upstream revision, so an older installed version may diverge. An installed snapshot does not update itself; freshness comes from re-running the installer or git pull. The license is AGPL-3.0, and the documentation stays under the upstream project's terms. It is a reference; it contains no runnable code.
How to disable. Remove the openclaw-docs directory from your agent's skills folder, for example ~/.codex/skills/openclaw-docs. If the host copies skills into a managed directory, remove it through the host's own mechanism.
Security check
- The skill consists of documentation and lookup instructions, with no runnable code
README in short
The README describes a skill that turns the official OpenClaw documentation into a daily-updated source for an agent. Installation goes through SkillHub or by cloning into a skills directory and running the installer, which does a fast-forward-only git pull and prints the revisions. Progressive disclosure moves from SKILL.md to an index, a topic catalog, and at most three documents, while exact errors and commands are searched directly. The repository holds SKILL.md, agents/openai.yaml, the references catalogs, and SOURCE.json with the snapshot revision. The license is AGPL-3.0, and the content is synchronized from the OpenClaw repository and documentation.
SKILL.md
--- name: openclaw-docs description: Find authoritative guidance for installing, configuring, operating, securing, and troubleshooting OpenClaw, including channels, model providers, Gateway operations, tools, plugins, automation, nodes, multi-agent routing, and CLI errors. Use for any question or maintenance task involving an OpenClaw installation, `openclaw` CLI command, Gateway daemon, configuration key, or integration. --- # OpenClaw documentation Use the synchronized official documentation as the source of truth. Keep context small by loading only the files and sections needed for the current request. ## Establish the version boundary 1. Read `references/SOURCE.json` when provenance or freshness matters. 2. For operational work, obtain `openclaw --version` when it is available and relevant. 3. Treat the references as documentation for the recorded upstream `main` revision. Flag a possible version mismatch when the installed OpenClaw version is older. 4. Never invent a command, flag, configuration key, default, or migration step. Search the references and state uncertainty when the documentation does not establish the answer. Do not update the installed skill during ordinary questions. Use the local snapshot without blocking the user. Refresh only when the user asks to install or update the skill. ## Find documentation progressively Choose the narrowest route that fits the request.
FAQ
How often are the docs updated?
The public repository syncs daily. An installed snapshot updates only when you re-run the installer or do a git pull.
Which agents does it work with?
It is a skill in the standard SKILL.md format. The README documents installing for Codex and via SkillHub, plus cloning into your agent's skills directory.
