What it does
OpenCode Game Studios is a framework for agent-driven game development. It contains 52 agents with defined responsibilities, 78 skills, 78 commands, 11 rule files and plugins for OpenCode and Pi. Work proceeds by stages: quick prototypes of two to four ideas, then brainstorming, a systems map, section-by-section GDD documents and cross-review before any code. Phase gates between stages return PASS, CONCERNS or FAIL verdicts. The framework is split into 22 modules covering core, art, design, architecture, QA, release and specialists for Godot 4, Unity, Unreal Engine 5 and SFML 3, so you install only what you need. For Claude Code and Codex, `/init-template --harness claude` (or `codex`) generates agent files in `.claude/` and `.codex/`.
Who it is for. Small game teams and solo developers on Godot, Unity or Unreal who want to run a project through agents in a studio-style process instead of one long chat.
Good fit when
- A game starts from zero and a path from idea to design documents and a release plan is wanted.
- Before choosing a direction, several no-commitment prototypes should be sketched quickly.
- A Godot 4 project needs an agent that knows GDScript, shaders and GDExtension.
- A team builds its game in OpenCode or Pi and wants ready slash commands for each stage.
Not a fit when
- The job is one-off, such as tuning a single mechanic, and the whole studio process would be overkill.
- The project already follows other conventions and a rigid agent hierarchy will clash with them.
- A build is needed on Windows without git symlinks, where the `.opencode/` folders need manual repair.
Example request
Run `/start`, propose three Godot 4 platformer ideas and prepare a section-by-section design document for the chosen one.Limitations
The author warns of active development, so breakage between versions is possible. Agents with `model:` frontmatter sometimes fail with `ProviderModelNotFoundError` even though the same model works through `opencode -m`. On Windows the `.opencode/agents`, `commands`, `skills` and `rules` folders are stored as git symlinks and turn into text stubs without `core.symlinks=true`. Pi has no subagent tool, so the main agent does the work. The volume is large: 78 skills and hundreds of module files take up a lot of context.
How to disable. Delete the `.agents/`, `.opencode/`, `.pi/` folders and `AGENTS.md` from the project. Remove files that `/init-template` created in `.claude/` and `.codex/` by hand.
FAQ
How does it differ from Claude Code Game Studios?
It is a port and evolution: the original has 49 agents and 72 skills, this one has 52 agents, 78 skills and 78 commands. OpenCode, Pi, oh-my-pi and modular installation were added.
Which game engines are covered?
Godot 4 (GDScript, C#, shaders, GDExtension), Unity (DOTS, Addressables, shaders), Unreal Engine 5 (GAS, Blueprint, UMG) and SFML 3. Each engine ships as a separate module.
Must I install every module?
No. Of the 22 modules only `core` is required and the rest are added per project, for example `design`, `qa` or `engine-godot`.
What do the phase gates do?
They check whether gaps in the previous phase are closed and return PASS, CONCERNS or FAIL. On FAIL the move to the next phase is blocked.
Is there an example project?
Yes, OCGS-Pong, a complete Pong game built with this toolchain from concept to implementation.
