What it does
The `ppt-speech-writer` skill parses a `.pptx` through its XML: titles, text, tables and charts. Slides are rendered to PNG, and OCR with a vision review adds what XML misses, such as labels inside screenshots. This builds an inventory of visible elements for each slide. The spoken text is tied to what is actually on the slide. Two versions come out: a rehearsal one in `.docx` or Markdown with pauses and a timing table, and a clean one that a script injects into the PowerPoint notes pane. Speech length follows a pacing model of about 110 words per minute for English.
Who it is for. Conference speakers, graduate students and teachers who have a finished deck but no talk script or slide notes.
Good fit when
- A defense deck is ready but the text for each slide is not written.
- Slides hold charts and screenshots and the notes must describe what they show.
- The talk is capped at fifteen minutes and the script must fit the clock.
- Rehearsal needs a script version with pauses and per-slide timing.
Not a fit when
- The file is a PDF or Keynote rather than a `.pptx`.
- The deck is confidential and OCR with vision review sends frames to a model.
- You want a free-form talk detached from what is drawn on the slides.
Example request
Write speaker notes for `deck.pptx` for a 15-minute English talk and inject the clean version into the notes pane.Limitations
The project targets academic talks, and the output language must be confirmed before drafting. Rendering needs LibreOffice or macOS Quick Look, OCR needs Tesseract and the Word document needs `python-docx`; with missing dependencies the skill uses the best available evidence and reports the limits. Complex charts, SmartArt and screenshots deserve a manual look. Notes are injected into a copy of the deck. The last repository commit is from June 2026.
How to disable. Remove the skill from the agent skills directory or the project folder `.claude/skills/ppt-speech-writer`. Generated files live in the `<deck-stem>-speaker-output` folder.
FAQ
How do I connect the skill to Claude Code?
Open Claude Code from the repository root: the project skill sits in `.claude/skills/ppt-speech-writer`. Invoke `/ppt-speech-writer`.
What do I install in Codex?
The `speaker-v8.skill` file through your Codex client's skill import.
What do I get at the end?
Two versions: a rehearsal one in `.docx` or Markdown with pauses and a timing table, and a clean one in the PowerPoint notes.
Can the glossary be turned off?
Yes, in version 0.8 the key parameters and methods table has an on/off switch.
Is Tesseract required?
It is used for OCR of text in images and screenshots. Without it the skill uses the best available evidence and reports the limit.
