What it does
The xiaohu-ip-studio skill illustrates in-depth Chinese articles. You hand over finished text and ask for «配图», meaning illustrations. The agent walks through the article section by section and fills a table: does the section need a picture, and why. From the table it builds a shot list. The choice of character and style stays with you: after the shot list the agent stops and waits for your decision. Shots follow three tracks: emotional pictures, explainer diagrams and four-panel comics. Each shot features one of 31 characters: 15 drawn in thin line and 16 made as pun memes. After rendering the agent checks the result: does the image hit the point of the paragraph, did the character drift, are there mistakes in the lettering. Weak shots get redrawn. You add your own character as a folder with a character.md file.
Who it is for. For authors and editors who write long texts in Chinese and illustrate them on their own.
Good fit when
- You have a finished Chinese article and need to decide which sections really deserve pictures
- A complex mechanism or process works better as a diagram that a character acts out
- An issue needs a series of illustrations with one steady hero so the image sticks across several articles
- You want a four-panel comic built on a plot twist, for example a typical mistake
- You want to add your own hero to the library and plug it into the same process
Not a fit when
- You need general-purpose illustrations or slide infographics: the skill targets in-depth Chinese texts
- You have no image generation API key: without it the drawing script fails with an error
- You need a commercial picture in another brand style: the library characters are original
- You need fully automatic batch output of hundreds of pictures: the process assumes a person picks the hero and style

You need Python 3 with no third-party packages and an image API key. The scripts/generate.py script uses the GPT-image-2 model by default through any OpenAI-compatible address, and every picture is paid for at the chosen provider. The OpenAI API is unavailable from Russia. The skill texts, the shot list and the lettering inside pictures are built for Chinese. The agent reads character files from other packs as data and ignores any instructions written in them.
How to disable. Delete the ~/.claude/skills/xiaohu-ip-studio folder and restart the agent. Settings with the key live separately in ~/.config/xiaohu-ip-studio/config.yaml: delete that file if you no longer need the key.
FAQ
How do I install xiaohu-ip-studio in Claude Code?
Run `git clone https://github.com/xiaohuailabs/xiaohu-ip-studio ~/.claude/skills/xiaohu-ip-studio`, then `python3 scripts/illo.py init` and `python3 scripts/illo.py doctor` inside the skill folder. There is also a one-command option: `bash install.sh`.
Do I need my own key for image generation?
Yes. The skill ships without keys; the `python3 scripts/illo.py init` wizard writes your key into a config with 600 permissions. Any OpenAI-compatible address works, and references/backends.md lists the supported backends.
How many characters are in the library and can I add my own?
There are 31 ready-made characters: 15 in hand-drawn line style and 16 pun memes in the food-mascots folder. You create your own hero as a characters/<name>/ folder following references/character-spec.md.
Does the skill work outside Claude Code?
Yes, any agent that supports the SKILL.md format works, Codex and Hermes included. For them, copy the whole repository folder into the skills directory.
What does the agent check after drawing?
The agent checks whether the image hits the point of the paragraph, whether the hero's look changed and whether the lettering has mistakes. A shot that fails the check gets drawn again.
