Extended access
Why this level
- Commands can read and write Git internals; use a separate copy for repository-changing operations.
Install

How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
gitoxide supplies two repository tools: gix for low-level inspection and library testing, and ein for higher-level workflows. An agent can use them through the terminal to inspect repositories and supported operations. The project implements object, reference, index and configuration access alongside selected network and worktree operations. Feature support varies, so verify the relevant command before a task.
Who it is for. Git-tool developers inspecting real repositories and evaluating a Rust implementation.
Good fit when
- Diagnosis needs object or reference inspection in a test repository.
- An implemented operation needs comparison with standard Git.
- An agent helps validate library changes against a separate checkout.
- Integration needs confirmation that a particular Git capability exists.
Not a fit when
- You need a complete replacement for every Git command.
- Scripts require stable gix or ein interfaces.
- A production repository cannot be copied or backed up before write operations.
Example request
Check available gix capabilities for this test repository copy and propose read-only operations.Limitations
The gix and ein CLIs are unstable, and the author advises against relying on them in long-lived scripts. Some Git operations remain unimplemented; consult feature status before choosing a command. The first installation route uses cargo-binstall and Rust, with different builds offering different features. Write operations can modify objects, references and indexes, so start with a separate copy and verify results using standard Git tools.
How to disable. Stop using gix and ein and uninstall the binaries. Removing them does not undo repository changes.
FAQ
Why are there two commands?
gix covers low-level operations; ein provides higher-level workflows.
Is push supported?
The current feature list marks push as unfinished; use standard Git when pushing is required.
Where can I check feature status?
Read `crate-status.md` and the repository feature list.
Can I use a prebuilt binary?
Yes. The first route uses cargo-binstall; Releases also provides archives.
What is the gix library for?
It provides Rust application APIs; the CLI is the command-line surface.

README in short
Library stability differs from CLI stability. The project documents status and minimum Rust requirements separately.
