How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

A Python project can define separate environments and commands for tests, builds and other tasks in Hatch configuration. An agent reads those settings and runs the selected script using its declared dependencies. Users maintain the configuration and inspect the package set assigned to each task. Environments are created when first needed and dependencies synchronized to declarations. Separate scripts and environment matrices cover different tasks. Versioning and publication are also available, allowing release work to stay distinct from local development.

Who it is for. Maintainers of Python packages defining a consistent agent workflow for testing, building and release preparation.

Good fit when

  • A new Python package needs its initial structure.
  • An agent runs checks in a project-specific environment.
  • Different tasks need separate dependency sets.
  • A release needs a package build before a separate publishing decision.

Not a fit when

  • You only need to install an existing end-user CLI application.
  • You expect a security sandbox for untrusted Python code.
  • Project scripts and build configuration must not execute with user permissions.

Example request

Read Hatch configuration, list environments and propose a test run, leaving build and publication as separate steps.

Limitations

The current Hatch Python package requires Python 3.10 or newer, while project environments may have different requirements. Running a command can create its environment and install dependencies automatically, so inspect configuration before first execution. When both pyproject.toml and hatch.toml define the same settings, the latter takes precedence. Publishing accesses a real registry with your credentials and should be a separately approved step.

How to disable. Stop running commands and leave any active environment shell. Removing Hatch does not undo project edits or published packages.

FAQ

Must I create an environment manually?

Not necessarily. Hatch creates the environment when you run a command in it or open its shell.

How do I enter an environment?

Use `hatch shell`.

How do I leave its shell?

Enter `exit`.

What does Syncing dependencies mean?

Hatch is updating environment dependencies to match project settings.

Where is configuration stored?

In `pyproject.toml` or a separate `hatch.toml`. When both define the same setting, `hatch.toml` takes precedence.

CLI tools

The CLI runs several commands in one terminal and labels their output so users can distinguish processes in agent workflows.
