What it does

MCP Server Bash SDK lets you write an MCP server entirely in Bash. Protocol version 2026-07-28, `jq` is needed (`brew install jq` or `apt install jq`). Installation by cloning: `git clone https://github.com/muthuishere/mcp-server-bash-sdk`. Streaming (SSE) is not supported. `socat` is recommended for the connection mode. Version 0.4.1 from 04.08.2026, MIT license. It is a base on which you write your own tools and not a ready server.

Who it is for. For developers who need a very small MCP server on shell scripts without a runtime such as Node or Python.

Good fit when

  • You need an MCP server on Bash without Node and Python
  • You need to quickly wrap shell commands in MCP tools
  • You need a minimal MCP protocol example

Not a fit when

  • You need a ready server: this is a base
  • You need SSE streaming: it is absent

Example request

Write an MCP tool in Bash that returns free disk space and connect it to the agent

Limitations

This is a base: access depends on the tools you add to it, and they run shell commands. Validate input to prevent command substitution. There is no SSE streaming. The author lists paid consultations, which are not part of the project.

How to disable. Delete the repository clone and the server entries from the client.
