What it does
navi is a terminal tool for finding commands by description in cheatsheet files. Users choose a recipe and fill arguments from suggested values, which can be generated dynamically from project state. Cheatsheets can be authored locally or imported from repositories. The shell widget inserts the command into the input line for editing before execution. Search uses fzf or skim, and recipes live in readable `.cheat` files.
Who it is for. On-call engineers who use complex CLIs occasionally and keep reviewed commands with parameter prompts.
Good fit when
- You use a complex command infrequently and look it up by task description.
- The project team is collecting shared, reviewed command recipes.
- A parameter depends on project files or branches, and you select it from a list.
- A recipe is almost right; the shell widget inserts it for editing.
Not a fit when
- The job must run unattended without interactive questions.
- You plan to run imported recipes against work data without reading their commands.
- You need an actively expanding feature platform.
Example request
Prepare a navi cheatsheet for three project commands with branch selection. Show recipes and suggestion commands before running them.Limitations
The project is in maintenance mode: bug fixes continue, but new features are not planned. Search relies on fzf or skim, so verify the chosen backend in your environment. Dynamic suggestions and recipes can execute commands; review third-party cheatsheets first. Shell-widget integration is a separate setup, and ordinary navi invocation does not provide the same command-line editing step before execution.
How to disable. Remove shell-widget configuration and uninstall navi through the package manager. Preserve personal cheatsheets separately.
FAQ
Where are cheatsheets stored?
By default under `~/.local/share/navi/cheats/`. Inspect it before importing recipes.
Can I write my own recipes?
Yes. Create a `.cheat` with descriptions, commands and optional parameter sources, then test it safely.
What does the shell widget add?
The widget inserts the command into the input line and history for editing before Enter. Follow the [setup instructions for your shell](https://github.com/denisidoro/navi/blob/master/docs/widgets/README.md#installing-the-shell-widget).
Can I import repositories?
Yes. Import repositories with the `navi repo add` subcommand. See the [repository import guide](https://github.com/denisidoro/navi/blob/master/docs/cheatsheet/repositories/README.md#importing-cheatsheet-repositories) for the address and usage options.
How do I inspect launch options?
Run `navi --help` and use your installed version’s guidance.
