What it does
Reolink CLI is a CLI for operating Reolink cameras, video doorbells and NVRs directly over a local network. Users register devices and receive model, stream and capability information as JSON. A Reolink cloud account is unnecessary. The same runtime lets an agent capture snapshots, move a camera, adjust lights and search recordings. The distribution includes a local gateway, a skill and a built-in MCP server, sharing one device registry across terminal and agent use.
Who it is for. Reolink camera administrators collecting diagnostics and operating multiple devices by name or tag.
Good fit when
- An operator checks camera models and firmware before a surveillance system update.
- Several outdoor cameras need snapshots selected by a shared tag.
- An agent searches recordings and retrieves stream URLs for Frigate or Home Assistant.
- An operator reads detection events and processes them in a script.
Not a fit when
- The operator manages cameras from another manufacturer.
- The team has cloud access only, without a route to the camera LAN.
- An administrator needs published binary source code for an independent build.
Example request
Show the model and capabilities of camera porch, then take a snapshot; leave network, sound and PTZ settings unchanged.Limitations
Most commands use a local gateway, which must run separately and share its address with the client. Features vary by model; `capabilities` lists support and unsupported operations return an error. A battery camera paired with a Home Hub is reached through registered hub channels. Binary source code is unpublished: the repository contains installers and integrations, while the CLI binaries use a proprietary EULA.
How to disable. Stop the gateway process and run `reolink-cli setup --uninstall`. Remove the Claude Code plugin with `/plugin uninstall reolink-cli` if installed. The ordinary uninstall preserves configuration and the camera registry.
FAQ
What is the Claude Code installation path?
In Claude Code, run `/plugin marketplace add reolink/reolink-cli`, followed by `/plugin install reolink-cli@reolink-cli`. Install the binaries separately first; the plugin registers the skill and MCP server but does not start the gateway.
How can I start with inspection?
After registering a camera, run `reolink-cli --camera porch info` and `reolink-cli --camera porch capabilities`. Replace `porch` with your device name to inspect its model and supported actions.
How do I save a snapshot?
Run `reolink-cli --camera porch snapshot --file ./porch.jpg` to save a JPEG. Select the intended registered camera and choose the snapshot path first.
How do I start the gateway?
Run `reolink-cli gateway start --addr 127.0.0.1:9000` in a separate terminal. Set `export REOLINK_GATEWAY_ADDR=127.0.0.1:9000` in the client shell to connect the CLI to that gateway.
How do I retrieve stream URLs?
The README gives `reolink-cli --camera porch stream url --kind rtsp, rtmp, flv --stream main, sub`. The response separates addresses and credentials; retain them only where your player can access them.

README in short
Commands select an explicit camera, device list or tag. `reolink-cli device add porch --host 192.0.2.41 --user admin` prompts for a password without echoing it; replace the example address and name. Video playback needs `ffplay`.
