Broad access
Why this level
- Remote programs run with the connected computer user’s permissions and can change its files.
Install
Manual install
pnpm --filter @rome-os/node build
pnpm --filter @rome-os/node-core pack --pack-destination /tmp
pnpm --filter @rome-os/node pack --pack-destination /tmp
npm install -g /tmp/rome-os-node-core-0.1.0.tgz /tmp/rome-os-node-0.1.0.tgzRun at the repository root. These commands build and install the CLI together with node-core.

What it does
Rome Node lets an agent, script or terminal reach a computer you connect to Rome. The computer advertises available actions, and the caller can inspect them before invoking one. A shared background caller daemon handles the connection across CLI invocations. Commands return JSON with diagnostics on a separate stream. Rome stores apps and reusable agent actions; Node CLI is the separate component that brings your computers into that environment.
Who it is for. For developers who want an agent to reach their own work computers without installing a full Rome instance on each.
Good fit when
- Inspect a repository on another connected machine.
- Copy a completed file from a device to the local computer.
- Authorize a headless server using another device.
- Give a script a machine-readable result for a remote action.
Not a fit when
- You need access without the computer owner’s authorization.
- You need a direct one-call transfer between two remote devices.
- Your workflow must automatically retry every command after a lost connection.
Example request
Inspect available actions on my Rome work computer and show repository status without changing files.Limitations
The connected computer needs Node.js 24 or later; an older Node.js version cannot run this client. The device and the caller sending commands must belong to the same Rome cloud account. Remote output stays in memory until the program exits, so a long command cannot show new output lines as it runs. A connection lost after submission can leave the outcome unknown: inspect the device before retrying to avoid executing the same action twice.
How to disable. Stop `rome-node connect` with Ctrl+C to disconnect the computer. `rome-node daemon stop` closes the local caller daemon; stored credentials remain.
FAQ
How do I connect a headless computer?
Use device authorization: `rome-node connect --device-code --name "Remote Linux" --cloud https://romeos.cc`. Approve it on another device.
When is a destination file replaced?
After size and SHA-256 checks and a flush to disk. Data first goes into a nearby temporary file; a failed transfer leaves the original unchanged.
Does help require signing in?
No. `rome-node help` works without credentials and does not start the daemon. Command-specific help is also available locally.
Can I send binary input to a program?
Yes. `device run` accepts `--input` and `--output` to pass raw bytes and save the program’s standard output.
What does `rome-node watch` observe?
The caller’s Gateway connection. `rome-node watch` writes JSON events, but those events do not confirm that a remote device is online.

README in short
The managed computer runs `rome-node connect`, while a client on another computer sends commands. Closing the connection disconnects the device and keeps credentials for the next launch.
