Extended access
Why this level
- The source text goes to an external LLM API under your key, and web pages and videos are fetched by link
- Repository mode reads the docs and sources of a folder or public repository and passes them to a model
Install
- Works in
Manual install
git clone https://github.com/SYuan03/Skill-Anything.git && cd Skill-Anything && pip install -e ".[all, dev]"Install from a clone, recommended by the author. Then copy .env.example to .env and set the key and model.
Access and checks
How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.
- The source text goes to an external LLM API under your key, and web pages and videos are fetched by link
- Repository mode reads the docs and sources of a folder or public repository and passes them to a model
This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
Skill-Anything takes a source, splits it into sections and builds a study pack: structured YAML, a 12-section guide, quizzes of six types, spaced-repetition flashcards and exercises. The sa command accepts a PDF, a YouTube link, a web page, a text file, audio, a local repository or a public GitHub repository, and sa auto detects the source type itself. Every question, flashcard and exercise must carry a verbatim quote from the source. The tool checks it against the source text and drops what it cannot confirm. The pack exports in several formats: a Markdown guide, a single-file index.html offline site, an Anki deck as TSV and a SKILL.md directory with references, assets and a quiz script. The directory is copied into ~/.claude/skills, ~/.cursor/skills or a project's .claude/skills, and Claude Code, Cursor or Codex read it as a skill. sa import-skill turns an existing skill back into a study pack, sa lint checks it before sharing, and sa audit with --strict serves as a CI check.
Who it is for. People who study from a book, lecture or documentation, and teams who want to turn internal documents and repositories into agent skills.
Good fit when
- A textbook chapter in PDF becomes a graded quiz and review flashcards
- A YouTube lecture is split by topic and an Anki deck exports with one command
- A library's documentation should go to Claude Code as a skill with a glossary and references
- An external skill goes through sa lint before installing or publishing
- A study site should go to a colleague as a zip that opens without Python and keys
Not a fit when
- You need a skill with exact step-by-step procedures: the output is built from a summary of the source, not from an executable workflow
- The source is confidential and must not go to a third-party LLM API: avoid running without your own key and a local model
- You only need a translation or a short summary: a direct model prompt is enough
- A video has no subtitles and no way to get a transcript
Example request
Run sa auto textbook.pdf --format all, check the result with sa audit --strict and put the skill directory into ~/.claude/skillsLimitations
- Quizzes and flashcards need a model with an OpenAI-compatible API: OpenAI, DeepSeek, Qwen, Ollama or another. Without a key only a simpler rule-based generation remains, with lower quality.
- The concept map image comes from an image model and is skipped without one. Audio is transcribed by local Whisper or the Whisper API.
- Video works from subtitles or a transcript: a local file needs a .srt or .vtt beside it.
- Python 3.10 or newer is required. PDF, video, web and audio sources install as extra packages, for example skill-anything[pdf].
How to disable. pip uninstall skill-anything removes the package. Directories you copied into ~/.claude/skills or ~/.cursor/skills are deleted by hand. The generation cache sits in output/.skill-anything/ and can be erased or bypassed with --no-cache.
FAQ
How do I install Skill-Anything?
Clone the repository, enter the folder and run pip install -e ".[all,dev]". From PyPI use pip install skill-anything[all]. Then copy .env.example to .env and set the key and model.
Does it work without an API key?
Yes, in a simpler mode: quizzes, flashcards and notes are built by rules rather than by a model, with lower quality. The concept map image is skipped without an image API.
How do I get a Claude Code skill from a PDF?
Run sa pdf textbook.pdf --format skill or sa auto textbook.pdf --format all, then copy the resulting folder with cp -r output/my-skill/ ~/.claude/skills/. It holds SKILL.md, references, assets and the quiz.py script.
Why do questions carry quotes from the source?
Every question, flashcard and exercise must carry a verbatim quote and the tool checks it against the text. Unconfirmed items are rejected, and sa audit with --strict finds missing quotes and duplicates.
Which sources does Skill-Anything support?
PDFs, video by YouTube link or .srt and .vtt subtitle files, web pages, audio transcribed by local Whisper or the API, text files and repositories, local and public on GitHub. The sa auto command detects the type from the shape of the source.

README in short
The README begins with versions 0.4.1, 0.4, 0.3 and 0.2 and what they added: quote checking, an offline site, Anki, handling of long sources. It then covers the quick start, output structure, skill export, quiz types, sources and a command reference. The page ends with environment variables, project structure, use cases and an FAQ.
