What it does
squirrelscan audits a website and tells the agent what to fix. It is an open CLI with more than 300 rules in 22 categories, from SEO and performance to structured data and mobile. A separate rule group scores how ready the site is for AI agents: llms.txt, AGENTS.md, Markdown responses and what crawlers such as GPTBot receive. Every finding comes with a fix in an agent-friendly format. The agent runs an audit, maps issues to project files, fixes them in batches and re-audits until the score goes up. In the demo, the site's score rose from 32 to 92 out of 100 after Claude Code's edits. A report can go straight to an agent, for example with `squirrel audit example.com --format llm | claude`. Besides the CLI there is a hosted MCP server, a plugin for Claude Code and Cursor and two skills. The squirrelscan skill teaches the agent to use the CLI, and audit-website runs the full fix cycle.
Who it is for. For web developers and SEO specialists who fix a site together with Claude Code, Cursor or Codex and want a verifiable list of problems.
Good fit when
- You need a technical audit of SEO, speed, security and accessibility in one command
- You want the agent to fix findings and recheck the result by score
- The check must go into CI and the report is needed as JSON or Markdown
- You want to know whether AI crawlers read your site like a browser does and whether llms.txt exists
- You need link checks and comparison of results between crawls
Not a fit when
- You need keyword and ranking research: the tool audits site pages and does not track rankings
- Site data cannot go to an outside service, yet you need browser rendering or AI page analysis: they run in the squirrelscan.com cloud
- You need an expert's manual review of content and tone
Example request
Use the audit-website skill to audit this site and fix all issues, crawling only 10 pagesLimitations
Some features work only after signing in: cloud browser rendering, AI page analysis, scheduled audits and issue tracking. Without sign-in, JavaScript-heavy pages are audited without rendering. Scheduled audits with broken link emails are available only on the Pro and Team plans. The hosted MCP server accepts OAuth sign-in or an API key in a Bearer header. `squirrel self update` updates a CLI installed by script and leaves a brew install alone.
How to disable. Delete the squirrel binary or run npm uninstall -g squirrelscan. Skills live in ~/.agents/skills and ~/.claude/skills, and the MCP entry is removed from the client configuration.
FAQ
How do I install squirrelscan?
Run `npm install -g squirrelscan` or the script `curl -fsSL https://install.squirrelscan.com | bash`. On macOS there is `brew install --cask squirrelscan/tap/squirrel`, on Windows a PowerShell script. Without installing, `npx squirrelscan audit example.com` works.
How do I connect squirrelscan to Claude Code?
Add the plugin with `/plugin marketplace add squirrelscan/skills` and `/plugin install squirrelscan@squirrelscan`. Or only the MCP server: `claude mcp add --transport http squirrelscan https://mcp.squirrelscan.com/mcp`.
What does the Agent Experience group check?
Whether the site serves AI crawlers the same content as a browser and whether AGENTS.md and llms.txt exist. Whether it supports Markdown responses and how it advertises its API and MCP. Whether licensing and noai signals are present.
Is squirrelscan free?
The CLI is open source under MIT and free without an account. Cloud features need a sign-in, and some of them come with paid plans.
Which report formats are available?
Console, JSON, HTML, Markdown, text, XML and an LLM format optimized for handing to an agent.
