What it does
Before calling a model, Summarize can extract source text from a URL, file or media item. Users inspect which material is available, then request a summary. An agent can retain the extracted text or structured output for further source-based work. Media processing prefers published captions and transcripts, then uses configured transcription fallbacks. Frame extraction and OCR depend on available tooling. Models come from configured APIs, local backends or authenticated coding CLIs.
Who it is for. Editors and researchers supplying extracted material to an agent and checking summaries against the source.
Good fit when
- A page needs clean readable text for an agent.
- A user wants to inspect extraction before summarization.
- An authorized video transcript needs a concise summary.
- A processing workflow needs JSON output for its next step.
Not a fit when
- You need a guaranteed accurate replacement for reading the source.
- Material must not reach the selected external model provider.
- The source is unavailable but the CLI is expected to reconstruct its contents.
Example request
First extract the authorized page without summarizing, show the text, then prepare a brief summary with key claims checked against it.Limitations
The npm package requires Node.js 24 or newer; Homebrew and standalone archives use separate installation routes. Text extraction can work without a model key, but summarization needs a configured provider or authenticated coding CLI. Transcription and additional media features depend on the source and installed tools. Content reaches the selected processor, so determine which material may be sent to an external service before running the workflow.
How to disable. Stop Summarize and separately disable its daemon if you paired a browser extension. Remove saved text, summaries and caches as needed.
FAQ
Can I extract text without an API key?
Yes. Use `--extract`, optionally with `--plain`.
How do I get JSON for a script?
Add `--json`.
Does interface language determine summary language?
No. Summary language is selected separately through `--language`.
How do I inspect active configuration?
Run `summarize status`, which is designed to show setup without revealing keys.
Is video always transcribed again?
No. Available published captions and transcripts are preferred first.
