What it does
Streamlink retrieves a stream from a supported service and passes it to an external player. Users supply a URL and quality, while an agent can prepare the command or interpret errors. VLC is the default player. Site support is plugin-based, with a documented plugin list. File output and stream metadata are also available. This supports authorized recording of your own broadcast or launching a selected live stream through a normal CLI workflow.
Who it is for. Organizers of their own broadcasts preparing command-line playback or authorized recording with an agent.
Good fit when
- A user wants an authorized broadcast in an external player.
- An agent prepares a command with an explicit quality choice.
- An owned broadcast needs recording for later review.
- A launch error needs checking against the supported plugin list.
Not a fit when
- The service or stream type has no supporting plugin.
- You need video editing with effects and a timeline.
- Viewing or saving the selected content is not authorized.
Example request
Prepare playback of my authorized stream at the best available quality and explain which player will start.Limitations
Support for a site depends on its plugin; service changes may require a Streamlink update. Normal playback needs an installed compatible external player because the CLI does not supply its own playback window. Distribution packages can lag behind current fixes, so check the installation route when site support fails. Recording consumes disk space and cannot guarantee completeness if the source stream disconnects.
How to disable. Stop Streamlink and its player process. Inspect and remove any partial recording if necessary.
