How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

What it does
CartCut MCP is a bridge between a coding agent and the open project in the CartCut video editor. The agent edits from a transcript, rearranges clips and adds captions and transitions. Users see the changes in the editor’s current timeline. The MCP client launches the bridge as a separate stdio process that forwards messages to the application’s local server. It reads the token from CartCut settings without manual entry. A separate plugin also installs an editing-workflow skill; the bridge package can be connected without that plugin.
Who it is for. Video editors working in CartCut who assign individual timeline edits through text requests to an agent.
Good fit when
- An author assembles a segment from meaningful transcript sections.
- An editor adds captions and adjusts individual clip durations.
- Scenes are rearranged while the result is reviewed in the editor.
- Motion, transitions or effects are adjusted after composition changes.
Not a fit when
- You need server rendering without a running CartCut editor.
- Your workflow forbids the agent from changing the current timeline.
- You need this bridge to connect a different video editor.
Example request
In the open CartCut project, shorten the pause before the second scene and add a caption, then show the changes for review.MCP

Environment variables
CARTCUT_MCP_TOKENsecret- Editor token, read from its settings by default.
Limitations
The MCP bridge needs Node.js 18 or later and runs as a local client process. CartCut must be open so the agent can reach the current editing project. An old `CARTCUT_MCP_TOKEN` environment value can override the current application token and cause connection failure; inspect it if access stops working. Do not blindly retry an interrupted edit: it may already have changed the timeline, so inspect the result in the editor first.
How to disable. Remove CartCut from the agent’s MCP configuration or close the editor. Use CartCut’s own undo history to revert the last edit.
FAQ
How do I connect CartCut to Codex?
Run `codex mcp add cartcut -- npx -y @cartesiancs/cartcut-mcp`. It uses the same bridge package as other clients.
Does the bridge send messages to the cloud?
No. It connects to the local CartCut endpoint. What the agent sends to its model provider depends on the selected client and model.
What happens after the editor updates?
The next call opens a fresh CartCut session and notifies the client to refresh its tools. If the previous call was interrupted, inspect the timeline first because its edit may already have applied.
How do I check the package version?
Run `npx -y @cartesiancs/cartcut-mcp --version`. The bridge sends diagnostics to stderr.
How do I install the skill together with the bridge?
Use the plugin: `/plugin marketplace add cartesiancs/cartcut`, then `/plugin install cartcut-editing@cartcut`. This route includes editing instructions and connection.
