Broad access
Why this level
- The agent gets access to real databases: queries, data edits and table creation are possible unless the connection is marked read-only.
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add mcp/dbcodeDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

What it does
DBCode is an extension for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Antigravity and Kiro: a client for more than 100 databases. The `@dbcode/mcp` package connects an agent to it, so the agent sees the schema and queries data through your saved connections without separate access setup. The `dbcode-cli` skill teaches the agent the `dbcode` command: find a connection (`dbcode connections`), run a query or a `.sql` file and get JSON or CSV output. AI permissions are set per connection.
Who it is for. Developers and analysts who already manage databases in DBCode and want Claude Code or Codex to read data from there without a second set of passwords.
Good fit when
- The agent checks a table schema and writes a query against real columns.
- A report needs a CSV export: `dbcode query` reads a `.sql` file and writes the result to a stream.
- The project repository has a data-check script that the agent runs against a saved connection.
- The database is read-only and the agent needs safe selects without copying rows by hand.
Not a fit when
- The DBCode extension is not installed: the package only connects to it and creates no connections of its own.
- Direct database access without an editor is needed: the server works through saved DBCode connections.
- The database must not be opened to an agent for either reading or writing.
Example request
Through DBCode, list the connections, pick the test database and count orders per day for the last week, read-only.MCP

Limitations
Using it requires the DBCode extension in one of the editors and Node.js 22.14 or newer. The `dbcode-cli` skill needs the CLI installed separately (the `DBCode: Install CLI` command in the palette), and some connection types are not yet available from the CLI. The license is proprietary: viewing and editing data, notebooks, schema diagrams and the MCP server are free, including for commercial teams, while the AI assistant belongs to a paid plan. The repository holds the product's public materials rather than the extension source.
How to disable. Remove the `dbcode` entry from the MCP client configuration or use the client's removal command, for Claude Code `claude mcp remove dbcode`. Delete the `dbcode-cli` skill folder from the agent's skills directory.
FAQ
How do I connect the server to Codex?
Run `codex mcp add dbcode -- npx -y @dbcode/mcp`. For Cursor, Windsurf and Claude Desktop add the same `npx -y @dbcode/mcp` to the client's MCP configuration.
Which editor is used?
The `--app` flag chooses it: `Code`, `Cursor`, `Windsurf`, `Antigravity` and others. Without the flag the package takes the newest installed DBCode.
Can the agent be limited to reads?
Yes. AI permissions are set per connection, and a database can be connected read-only. Start with that.
What does the dbcode-cli skill do?
It documents the `dbcode` command: `dbcode connections` lists connections and `dbcode query -c "My Postgres" "select now()"` runs a query. Outside a terminal the output is JSON.
Must an editor window be open?
No. When no editor is running, the server reads the saved DBCode connections directly.

README in short
The extension keeps database work inside the editor: data viewing and editing, SQL notebooks, ER diagrams and built-in MCP tools. The separate `@dbcode/mcp` package exposes them to external agents.
