What it does
Devnors Data MCP connects an assistant to the paid Devnors Data API with information about China. The API covers court rulings and current PRC law articles, a company registry with tax and enforcement records, academic papers and patents. The assistant first calls list_capabilities to learn which domains and filters exist, then calls the right tool with your parameters. Tools are grouped by domain. Legal tools search rulings and statutes. Enterprise tools take a company name or credit code and return registration details, annual reports and shareholders, plus tax status, penalties and dishonest debtor entries. Content tools pull Baidu suggest keywords, long-tail queries and the WeChat Index. The rest track parcels, run invoice OCR and look up papers, patents and scholars. A universal data_query tool accepts any domain and type pair. A successful reply carries the billed amount in the units field and a request_id. Failures come back structured with code and retryable fields. With them the agent can tell a low balance from a rate limit and retry only what is worth retrying.
Who it is for. For lawyers, analysts and marketers who vet Chinese counterparties, research PRC case law or study Chinese search and WeChat from Claude Desktop, Cursor and Codex.

Environment variables
DEVNORS_API_KEYrequired, secret- Devnors Data API key for the local run. In remote mode it goes in the Authorization header.
DEVNORS_DATA_BASE_URL- Address of a private instance of the service when the main one is not wanted.
Limitations
- A Devnors Data key is required, and calls draw down its balance. The insufficient_balance code means the account needs a top-up in the service console, and the WeChat Index is billed per keyword.
- All information concerns China: PRC statutes, Chinese registries, Baidu and WeChat. The tools do not fit Russian legal entities.
- The server stores no data of its own and is a layer over the API, so completeness and freshness of replies depend on the service.
- Some capabilities are only planned so far and return the not_implemented code.
- The project documentation is in English and Chinese.
How to disable. Remove the devnors-data entry from the mcpServers block in the client config and restart the client. For the local mode run pip uninstall devnors-mcp. You can revoke the key in the developer console on the service site.

How do I connect Devnors Data to Claude Desktop or Cursor?
Create a key in the developer console at data.devnors.com and add an mcpServers entry with the address https://data.devnors.com/mcp and an Authorization header like Bearer devnors_sk_live_xxx. No local Python install is needed.
How do I run Devnors Data MCP locally with Python?
Run `pip install devnors-mcp` and set command python with the arguments -m and devnors_mcp.server in the config, passing the key through env as DEVNORS_API_KEY. A ready entry is in the install methods section. For a private instance of the service set the DEVNORS_DATA_BASE_URL variable.
What should I do when the server returns insufficient_balance or rate_limited?
Retrying insufficient_balance is pointless: top up the balance in the service console. rate_limited is marked retryable, and so are unavailable and upstream_error. The underlying Python SDK retries 429 and 5xx replies with bounded backoff, and the MCP layer adds no retries of its own.
What can I ask Devnors Data for?
Searches of PRC court rulings and law articles, company checks by credit code and debtor lists, parcel tracking by carrier code and number. Scholar and paper search and Baidu suggestions for a keyword like "lawyer" work too.
What is the data_query tool for?
data_query is a single entry point for any domain and type pair. Dedicated tools like legal_case_search cover ready-made scenarios and are easier for the assistant to pick.
