What it does
docx-mcp is an MCP server that lets an agent read, create and edit Word files without Microsoft Word installed. Edits are written as tracked changes: deletions in red strikethrough, insertions underlined in green, so a lawyer or editor sees them in the document the way they would see a colleague's work. The server unpacks the docx, edits the XML directly and repacks it. Every edit is validated against the OOXML specification so Word does not «repair» the file on opening: orphaned footnotes, duplicate internal IDs and broken cross-references are caught before saving. The README claims more than 200 tools. After an editing session, generate_change_summary produces a text log: every insertion, deletion and replacement with date and author. diff_to_text compares two separate file versions and returns a docx with tracked changes and a txt summary you can paste into an email.
Who it is for. For lawyers, consultants, technical writers and compliance staff who delegate editing of contracts, reports and templates in docx format to an agent.
Good fit when
- You must change terms in every instance of a contract and leave a comment on each edit that cites the amendment
- A penetration test report must be built from a markdown file into the client's .dotx template with footnotes for CVEs
- Two versions of a proposal sit in separate files and you need a summary of differences for an email
- Before sending a document, check footnotes, cross-references and headings and remove a DRAFT watermark
- A template library needs a bulk replacement of the company name and the footer date
Not a fit when
- You need to edit a document open in a running Word in real time: the server works with the file on disk, a live-editing server fits better
- You need dependable redaction of confidential data: scrub_pii is experimental and not suitable as the only control
- Your documents are not in English: name detection in scrub_pii uses an English model and misses names in Arabic, CJK and other scripts
- You only need a spreadsheet or a presentation: the server handles docx only
Example request
Open contract.docx, find every «Net 30», replace it with «Net 60» as a tracked change and add a comment to each edit citing Amendment 3. Save as contract_revised.docx.MCP

Limitations
Python 3.10 or newer is required; it runs on macOS, Linux and Windows. The scrub_pii tool is experimental: on the first call it downloads the en_core_web_lg model of about 560 MB. The author warns that names in capitals, single-token names and phrases from legal boilerplate may be missed, so the output needs manual review.
The protection password is set through a tool, so store it separately. Always open the result in Word before sending it.
How to disable. In Claude Code run claude mcp remove docx-mcp. The skill the server installs on first start sits in the agent's skills directory and can be deleted by hand. Remove the package with pip uninstall docx-mcp-server.
FAQ
How do I install the docx-mcp Word server in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add docx-mcp -- uvx docx-mcp-server. You need uv and Python 3.10 or newer. On first start the server installs a helper skill with the workflow and refreshes it on every upgrade.
Does docx-mcp need Microsoft Word installed?
No. The server edits the XML inside the docx file directly, so Word is not required. Tracked changes, comments and footnotes appear when you open the file in Word.
Can I turn tracked changes off and edit text directly?
Yes. Every editing tool accepts tracked=False, and the change is written without revision markup.
How does docx-mcp differ from safe-docx and word-mcp-live?
docx-mcp works on a file on disk and focuses on tracked changes, a change log and structural audit. word-mcp-live edits a document open in a running Word, and safe-docx is another MCP server and CLI for docx covering reading, editing and comparison.
How do I get a list of changes after editing?
Call generate_change_summary: it creates a numbered txt file with every insertion, deletion and replacement. For two finished versions use diff_to_text, which returns a docx with tracked changes and a txt summary.
