What it does
The server edits Word documents while they are open. The README lists more than 110 tools: real tracked changes with an author name, comment threads, rollback of individual actions and layout diagnostics. File editing works on Windows, macOS and Linux. Live editing works on Windows through COM (an installed Word is needed, pywin32 installs automatically) and on macOS through JXA, where 40 of 44 live tools are available. In Docker only the cross-platform tools work. Install with `pip install word-mcp-live` or launch with `uvx word-mcp-live`.
Who it is for. For lawyers, editors and managers who edit contracts and texts in Word and want an agent to suggest changes in review mode.
Good fit when
- You need to edit an open contract so the changes show as tracked
- You need to leave comments and reply to others in the document
- You need to check document layout and find problems
Not a fit when
- You only need to generate a new file without Word: the file mode of other servers is enough
- You are not ready to let an agent edit an important document without a copy
Example request
Read the contract, suggest tracked changes on the payment clauses and reply to the lawyer's commentsMCP
- Transport
- stdio
- Authentication
- not required
Environment variables
MCP_AUTHOR- Author name of tracked changes
MCP_AUTHOR_INITIALS- Author initials of changes
Limitations
The server edits and saves the user's documents, so work on a copy. Live editing requires an installed Word on Windows or macOS: on Linux and in Docker only file editing is available. On macOS 40 of 44 live tools work. The tool count differs between the README and the repository description (124 and 114), so we write more than 110. The `MCP_AUTHOR` and `MCP_AUTHOR_INITIALS` variables set the author of tracked changes.
How to disable. Remove the word entry from the client config and run pip uninstall word-mcp-live if you installed the package.
