CBR currency exchange MCP server
evo-container-apps-currency-exchange-mcp-server-lab
A Cloud.ru teaching Node.js MCP server: daily Central Bank of Russia exchange rates and conversion to rubles, runs via Docker
Low risk
We rate an entry low when it mostly gives the agent instructions and reference material.
Why this level
- Only reads public exchange rates and computes conversions, no changes to external systems
- Access is gated by a token the developer sets at deploy time

Install
Manual install
yarn install && yarn docker:build && yarn docker:runLocal run via Docker from the README. Set the MCP_TOKEN variable before running.
This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
The server pulls daily exchange rates from cbr-xml-daily.ru once an hour and caches them. The agent gets a rates://latest resource with the latest rates as JSON and a convert tool that turns an amount from a chosen currency into rubles at the current rate. Access is protected by a Bearer token. The project is built with TypeScript and Express, with a ready Dockerfile and commands for pushing the image to Artifact Registry and deploying to Cloud.ru Container Apps.
Who it is for. For developers who need a simple CBR exchange rate in their agent, and for anyone who wants an example of their own MCP server on Cloud.ru Container Apps.
Good fit when
- You need today's official CBR rate for the dollar, euro or another currency
- You want to quickly convert an amount to rubles at the Central Bank rate
- You need a minimal MCP server example to deploy on Cloud.ru Container Apps
Not a fit when
- You need a real-time rate: CBR data updates once a day and is cached for an hour
- You want a ready public endpoint: you need to deploy the server yourself
Example request
How many rubles is 100 dollars right now at the CBR rate?Limitations
This is Cloud.ru's lab, teaching project, not a ready-to-use service: there is no public address, you need to build and deploy the server yourself via Docker or Container Apps. It has had no pushes for over a year. Rates lag by up to a day plus the hourly cache, so it is not fit for trading decisions.
How to disable. Stop the server container (docker stop or remove the app in Container Apps) and remove it from your MCP client config.

README in short
The README describes the project structure, install, dev, build and Docker run commands, the single required MCP_TOKEN environment variable, and two MCP items: the rates://latest resource and the convert tool. Separate sections cover pushing the image to Artifact Registry and deploying to Cloud.ru Container Apps with documentation links.
FAQ
Where do the rates come from?
From the open cbr-xml-daily.ru XML feed, which mirrors the Central Bank's official data.
Do I need a token to access it?
Yes, the server is protected by a Bearer token via the MCP_TOKEN variable, and requests without it are rejected.
