Broad access
Why this level
- A Trello token gives the agent write access: it creates, modifies and archives cards and attaches files
- The key and token sit in environment variables and the client config
- The chosen board and workspace persist in ~/.trello-mcp/config.json
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add mcp/mcp-server-trelloDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

What it does
MCP Server Trello gives an agent access to Trello boards through your API key and token. It can create, read and update cards and lists, manage checklists, attach files from URLs, write and edit comments, and read custom field definitions and set their values. It works with workspaces, and the active board or workspace can be switched on the fly without a restart; the choice persists in ~/.trello-mcp/config.json. Beyond a plain API wrapper it ships workflow tools. get_acceptance_criteria collects a card's acceptance-criteria checklist (named Acceptance Criteria, AC, DoD or Definition of Done) and returns the items, the unmet ones and the completion percentage. find_checklist_items_by_description searches items by text, while watch_card and watch_list route a card's or list's activity into Trello notifications. The server respects Trello's limits itself: 300 requests per 10 seconds per key and 100 per token. It runs through bunx or npx, and the TRELLO_ALLOWED_WORKSPACES variable restricts the agent to a list of permitted workspaces. The repository also contains an optional skill package in the skill/ folder.
Who it is for. For teams that track work in Trello and want Claude Code, Cursor or Claude Desktop to read boards and update cards.
Good fit when
- An agent should take a card, read its acceptance criteria and check its own work against them
- After a release you need to tick checklist items and leave comments on several cards
- You want a board triaged: list the lists, find overdue cards and move them
- A PDF or an image has to be attached to a card from a URL
- The agent works across several boards and switches the active one with set_active_board
Not a fit when
- You want to give an agent read-only access: with a write-capable token the server can modify and archive cards
- Work is tracked in Linear, Jira or a Russian tracker: you need a different MCP server
- You need OAuth sign-in: the server works with a Trello API key and token
- The agent must not see every workspace the token covers and you have not set TRELLO_ALLOWED_WORKSPACES
Example request
Open the Sprint 42 board, find cards with no acceptance criteria and list their namesMCP

Environment variables
TRELLO_API_KEYrequired, secret- API key from trello.com/app-key
TRELLO_TOKENrequired, secret- Trello token, which sets the agent's permissions
TRELLO_ALLOWED_WORKSPACES- Comma-separated IDs of permitted workspaces
TRELLO_BOARD_ID- Default board, marked deprecated
Limitations
You need a Trello API key and a token from trello.com/app-key. The server runs over stdio through bunx, npx or Bun.
- The token sets the permissions: whatever it allows is open to the agent, writing and archiving included.
- Date formats differ: dueDate takes a full ISO 8601 value with time, while the start date takes only YYYY-MM-DD.
- The TRELLO_BOARD_ID variable is marked deprecated: pass boardId as a parameter or pick a board with set_active_board.
- Behind a corporate proxy the server reads https_proxy or HTTPS_PROXY.
How to disable. Remove the server from your MCP settings with claude mcp remove trello or by editing the client's JSON. The token can be revoked at trello.com/app-key, and the saved board choice is in ~/.trello-mcp/config.json.
FAQ
How do I install Trello MCP in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add trello --env TRELLO_API_KEY=... --env TRELLO_TOKEN=... -- bunx @delorenj/mcp-server-trello. If Bun is not installed, npx works instead of bunx.
Where do I get the Trello API key and token?
At trello.com/app-key: the page shows the key and links to generate a token.
How do I limit the agent to one board or workspace?
For workspaces set TRELLO_ALLOWED_WORKSPACES to a comma-separated list of IDs: list_workspaces, list_boards and create_board then see only those. A board is passed as boardId or chosen with set_active_board.
What does get_acceptance_criteria do?
It looks for a checklist named Acceptance Criteria, AC, DoD or Definition of Done, ignoring case. On a match it returns the items, the unmet ones and the completion percentage; otherwise it names the aliases it tried and lists the checklists that exist.
Does the server enforce request limits?
Yes, it throttles itself to Trello's rules: 300 requests per 10 seconds per key and 100 per 10 seconds per token.

README in short
The page opens with the feature list: acceptance criteria, watching cards and lists, list management, board switching and rate limiting. Installation follows (quickstart for Claude Desktop and Cursor, a command for Claude Code, the MCP Registry entry), the optional skill package in the skill folder, environment variables and modes for working with several boards. Most of the page is a tool reference with call examples by group: checklists, cards, lists, comments, attachments and custom fields. The license is MIT.
