What it does

OpenHistory is a macOS 14+ app that gathers permitted window activity and turns it into a work timeline with hourly and daily summaries. Screenshots, audio and keystrokes are not recorded, and password fields and private browser windows are excluded. Agents reach a built-in MCP server on `127.0.0.1:47831`. It serves a protected projection without raw events: history search, a day or timeline item, referenced files and links, and a list of unfinished work. The `Copy prompt` button in Settings creates a separate revocable credential for each agent along with a prompt to paste. Summaries come from Apple on-device models or cloud OpenAI, Anthropic and Kimi with your own key.

Who it is for. People juggling several projects who want Claude Code or Codex to recall where work stopped yesterday.

Good fit when

  • In the morning you need yesterday work to compile a report or a standup.
  • A task has hung for a week and the agent is asked to find where it was left.
  • The agent collects links and files opened while working on a release.
  • Before a Friday wrap-up you get a list of unfinished work across all projects.

Not a fit when

  • Activity logging, even a local one, is forbidden by an employer or client policy.
  • You need Windows or Linux: the app targets macOS.
  • Confidential email and chats must stay out of summaries.

Limitations

The app installs from openhistory.sh or builds from source (Node.js 22, Xcode, Swift 6.1 и новее) and needs macOS Accessibility permission. At first launch email and messaging activity is selected by default, and the box must be cleared before setup ends. With a cloud provider, work details go to it about every ten minutes. Apple-model summaries need macOS 26 and Apple Intelligence. The server listens only on `127.0.0.1` and requires a bearer key, yet the data directory on disk stays sensitive. The project is at an early stage.

How to disable. Pause collection in the app, then choose `Delete all local data` under `Data & privacy`: it removes activity, summaries, keys and agent connections. Revoke the agent key in Settings.

FAQ

Does the agent see raw events or summaries?

Only a sanitized projection: summaries, timeline items and linked references. The raw activity log is not served through MCP, and passwords and tokens are scrubbed before storage.

Where does the agent key go?

Into the `Authorization` header, not the server URL. The key is random, stored as a SHA-256 hash and revocable independently of others.

Do summaries need a cloud key?

No. The Apple on-device model works without one, and a cloud provider is optional. Summaries can be turned off to keep only the log.

What is the MCP server address?

By default `http://127.0.0.1:47831/openhistory/mcp`. The server binds to loopback and rejects non-local browser origins.

How do I delete collected data?

Choose `Delete all local data` under `Data & privacy` in Settings. The app asks for confirmation and restarts.
