What it does

Screencap is a macOS 26 app for Apple Silicon. It captures the screen when the picture settles, recognises text on the device, splits the day into work threads and searches any word that appeared on screen. History is stored on the Mac. Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or Codex connects through the MCP server inside the app: `Screencap mcp install claude-code` adds the server and a skill. The tools `search`, `day`, `threads`, `thread`, `activity`, `now` and `screenshot` answer questions such as "what did I read on Tuesday" or "write my standup from yesterday". Ready-made prompts `standup`, `recap` and `resume` are included.

Who it is for. Mac owners working heavily with agents who want to ask them about the past day: what was done, where work stopped, which page was open.

Good fit when

  • A standup must be assembled from yesterday's windows, tabs and sessions.
  • An article read last week is not in browser history but a phrase from the screen is remembered.
  • Work on a task was interrupted and the agent should suggest the next step from its thread.
  • An assistant needs a screenshot of a given moment instead of a retelling.

Not a fit when

  • There is no Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 26: other platforms are not supported.
  • The screen often shows other people's chats or confidential documents that must not be stored.
  • Agents you do not control must not read the history, because screen text may contain instructions aimed at them.

Example request

Write a standup for yesterday from Screencap history, grouped by thread, and list unfinished items separately.

Limitations

Screencap stores screenshots and screen text on disk without its own encryption; protection relies on FileVault. To sort the day, captures and captions go through OpenRouter with your key; text-only mode sends no screenshots, but window titles are always sent. Agent access stays off until enabled in settings, and screenshots need a separate switch. An agent forwards what it reads to its own AI provider.

How to disable. Turn off "Let agents read my history" in Screencap settings and run `Screencap mcp uninstall claude-code`: the command removes the server entry and skill. Deleting moments erases their screenshots and text.

FAQ

How do I connect Claude Code?

Run `/Applications/Screencap.app/Contents/MacOS/Screencap mcp install claude-code`. It adds the server with `claude mcp add` and puts a skill at `~/.claude/skills/screencap/SKILL.md`.

Can agents see screenshots?

Only if "Include screenshots" is on. Access is off entirely by default, and without that switch agents read text only.

What does Screencap not capture?

Password managers, apps you exclude, private browser windows and the screen while a password field has focus. Keys and tokens on screen are replaced before storing.

How do I check the connection?

Run `Screencap mcp status`. It shows in which agents the server is registered.

Where does screen data go?

History stays on the Mac. To sort the day, captions and captures go through OpenRouter with your key, and an agent forwards what it reads to its AI provider.
