What it does
Agent Notifications connects desktop alerts to coding-agent events. Events depend on the client and can include completion, questions or pending tool permission. Claude Code and Codex alerts can display project and Git branch context. On supported setups, clicking an alert returns to the originating terminal or editor. Sound, delays and filters control delivery. Claude and Codex integration also installs an MCP server and skill for notifying the user during a task.
Who it is for. Developers running long tasks across several terminals while working in other applications.
Good fit when
- A long task finishes while the user works in another application.
- An agent waits for approval to call a tool.
- Alerts from parallel projects are distinguished by project and branch.
- A team receives events through a webhook in a configured channel.
Not a fit when
- You need identical events and focus behavior across every client.
- You need server availability monitoring.
- Organization policy forbids displaying project names or questions in desktop alerts.
Example request
Configure notifications for Codex task completion, showing the chosen channels and hook changes first.Limitations
Install the selected agent CLIs before setting up notifications; otherwise the installer has no agent integration to attach. For native Windows installation use Git Bash: running in WSL configures a different system. Sound and click-to-focus are not available in every agent; check the README’s Supported Agents table and your client guide before setup. Review and trust installed hooks in Codex so they can send work notifications.
How to disable. Disable the selected agent integration using the [uninstall section](https://github.com/777genius/agent-notifications/blob/main/docs/INSTALLATION.md#uninstalling) of `docs/INSTALLATION.md`. Disable webhook delivery separately when no longer needed.
FAQ
Which webhook destinations are supported?
Slack, Discord, Telegram and Lark/Feishu, plus custom endpoints. Choose a destination in the [webhook guides](https://github.com/777genius/agent-notifications/blob/main/docs/webhooks/README.md) and configure its channel separately.
What events does Cursor CLI receive?
An informational alert when its agent loop stops, with fixed text. The profile does not promise sound or click-to-focus.
Are webhooks enabled automatically?
No. New OpenCode, Gemini, Qoder and Cursor installs default to desktop delivery with webhooks off. Updates without channel flags preserve saved choices.
Can an agent notify the user mid-task?
Yes. Claude and Codex send these messages through the installed skill and MCP tools. Open a new agent session to load those tools.
How is it updated?
Run setup again. A normal Claude installation then follows its marketplace channel; the standalone Codex bundle is updated through setup.
