Why this level
- A Python script runs on every hook event with your user rights.
Install
- Works in
Manual install
git clone https://github.com/shanraisshan/claude-code-hooks.git temp-hooksFrom `install/README-mac.md`: after cloning, copy `.claude/hooks` into the project and merge the `hooks` keys into `.claude/settings.json`.
Access and checks
How we reviewMinimal accessThe tool runs nothing and makes no network calls.
- A Python script runs on every hook event with your user rights.
This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
The repository demonstrates all 30 Claude Code hooks with a working example: the `hooks.py` script reacts to lifecycle events and plays a short sound for each. Cues differ by event, for example separate sounds for a permission request, the start and end of a tool call and an agent stop. Installation is manual: the `.claude/hooks` folder is copied into the project and the `disableAllHooks` and `hooks` keys from `install/settings-mac.json` go into `.claude/settings.json`. Linux and Windows have their own guides and settings files. A demo agent in `.claude/agents` exercises agent-level hooks.
Who it is for. Claude Code developers who want an audible cue when the agent pauses or finishes, and authors studying hooks by example.
Good fit when
- The agent works in the background and a sound announces a permission request.
- A ready sample of wiring hooks in `.claude/settings.json` is needed.
- You want to hear which lifecycle events trigger hooks.
- A team checks the list of supported hooks against a Claude Code version.
Not a fit when
- Work happens in a shared office where sound is disruptive.
- Hooks are needed to block dangerous commands, not to signal.
- Python 3 is not available.
Example request
Wire the voice hooks from this repository into my macOS project and check that a sound plays on session start.Limitations
Python 3 is required; macOS uses the built-in `afplay` and other systems have their own guides. Without the prerequisites Claude Code reports `SessionStart:startup hook error`. Hooks run a script on every event with your user rights, so read `hooks.py` before enabling it. Sounds follow events and not the meaning of a reply, so some cues get tiresome fast: disable the extra ones in the configuration. The last commit is from 4 June 2026.
How to disable. Remove the `hooks` key from `.claude/settings.json` or set `disableAllHooks` to `true`, then delete the `.claude/hooks` folder.
FAQ
How many hooks are supported?
30, with the full list in `HOOKS-README.md` inside `.claude/hooks`.
How do I check that it works?
Start `claude` and send any prompt such as `Hi`: you will hear cues for session start, tool use and the reply.
What about the SessionStart error?
`SessionStart:startup hook error` means a prerequisite is missing: check Python 3 and an audio player for your system.
Is there a Windows and Linux version?
Yes. Each system has its own guide in `install/` and its own settings file because the Python command and script path differ.
How do I turn hooks off?
Remove the `hooks` key from `.claude/settings.json` or set `disableAllHooks` to `true`.
