What it does
Claude Code Statusline prints one colour-coded line at the bottom of the terminal. It shows the current model and reasoning effort, directory and git branch, working-tree status, context window fill, prompt-cache state and subscription rate-limit usage over 5 hours and 7 days. The `statusline.js` script is a single file, needs no build step and runs on macOS, Linux and Windows. Labels shrink to fit the terminal width and segment colour signals load. A plugin installs the script and a setup command; without the plugin the line is wired manually through the `statusLine` key in `~/.claude/settings.json`.
Who it is for. Claude Code subscribers who watch context and rate-limit usage and want the git branch visible inside the session.
Good fit when
- A long session where you need to notice the context window nearly filling up.
- Subscription limits are a constraint and the 5-hour and 7-day usage is not shown anywhere.
- A repository with many branches, where it matters which one the session runs on.
- The prompt cache expires unnoticed and the bill grows.
Not a fit when
- You need a graphical panel or metrics for past days.
- Claude Code is older than 2.1.97, which does not support `refreshInterval`.
- You already have a custom status line and do not plan to replace it.
Example request
Enable the status line from the plugin and explain what the `cache` and `5h` segments mean in my session.Limitations
The plugin does not enable the line itself: Claude Code does not let a plugin change `statusLine`, so the `/statusline-for-claude-code:setup` command is needed after installation. It rewrites one key in `~/.claude/settings.json` and saves a copy as `settings.json.bak`. Cache and limit segments depend on data Claude Code passes to the script: on older builds some values come from the session transcript or are hidden. The script only calls local git and makes no network requests. Last commit October 2026.
How to disable. Restore `settings.json.bak` or delete the `statusLine` key from `~/.claude/settings.json`, then uninstall the plugin.
FAQ
How do I enable the line after installing the plugin?
Run `/statusline-for-claude-code:setup`. It shows the current and proposed `statusLine`, then writes the key after confirmation and keeps a backup of your settings.
What if I do not use the plugin?
Put `statusline.js` in `~/.claude/hooks/` and add a `statusLine` key to `~/.claude/settings.json` with a `node` command and the file path. Then restart Claude Code.
Does the script send data over the network?
No. It reads JSON from Claude Code, runs read-only local git commands and writes a temporary file with context usage.
Why is `refreshInterval` needed?
Without it the cache countdown freezes while the session is idle. A value of 60 seconds refreshes the line every minute and requires Claude Code 2.1.97 or later.
Which systems are supported?
macOS, Linux and Windows. On Windows write the path in the JSON with forward slashes, for example `C:/Users/you/.claude/hooks/statusline.js`.

README in short
The script reads the standard status-line JSON from Claude Code and prints one coloured line. On any error it exits silently so it never blocks the session.
